I read in the text "signed a firm order for 50 ", which is far more than a commitment.

That's a lot and shall include plans for more routes after TAM / LAN merger. I can imagine 10 frames to Colombia, 10 to Peru, but not 10 for Lan Argentina or Ecuador and even Chile.
They will "invade" Brazil !

New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

What do you mean by this?

As far as I know some of these were ordered as a replacement for the A318 fleet which is mostly being operated in Chile.

This is historic for LAN Airlines S.A. as it represents the largest single airline order for Airbus in Latin America.

LAN also ordered 30 A320 family a/c before placing this order. The plan is to transfer these a/c to LAN Airlines, LAN Colombia, LAN Perú and eventually LAN Ecuador. LAN Airlines continues to receive new A320s from a previous order as well. LAN will phase out 5 A318s starting next month. Thus, 7 A318s will be based at SCL and 3 will remain in service with LAN Ecuador until late 2012. Next year, LAN Colombia will receive up to 20 new A320s rapidly.

Excellent news! The a/c with sharklets will begin to arrive in 2013, very exciting!

Great news.
Let's see if Airbus can firm the 100+ China order before year end.

LAN Airlines S.A. will receive two new A-320s today, (CC-BAG and CC-BAH). CC-BAH will be the first A-320 family a/c in the fleet that features CFM56-5B engines. LAN Airlines now has a fleet of 108 a/c. By 2018, LAN Airlines will have a fleet of over 225 a/c.

A sad day for the A318. When it was launched with 50 orders from TWA, I really believed the A318 was going to be a hit. I really like the looks of planes that are either shrunk or stretched. In other words. Those who you not regularly see. I did not know at that time that the planes was too heavy, and that the PW6000 would fail to meet its promised performance

They will fly elsewhere. The Elites make excellent government and VIP planes as long as the Ego fits into a normal container. Fortunately, I still see them almost daily from AF and Tarom.

Although being reported by a few sources as an A320-214, a photo on Planespotters.net shows it being an Airbus A320-233...

The Airbus press release refers to 10 A321's in the order for 50:

"The order also includes 10 A321s, a new aircraft type for the airline."

Not only for that as already mentioned by SCL767. It has to be for new routes, also.

It now appears that LAN Airlines will transfer a few A-318s over to LAN Colombia during Q1 of next year.

TWA ordered them and never flew them: http://www.nytimes.com/1998/12/10/bu...der-between-boeing-and-airbus.html .

Just like America West.

In fact TWA ordered 50 A318 as well as 25 A320. The A318 was to be used on long thin routes. They also ordered 50 717 with an option for 50 mores.

These 15 A318s have the only PW6000's in use. It all depends on how P&W is supporting these. I would think P&W is not making money on a fleet of 34 engines in service, but if LAN was smart they have an iron-clad contract to keep them flying affordably. Maybe some VP at P&W wants to keep these going. Who knows?

These A318s could be converted to CFM, but it seems like In F9's case the engines & other parts are probably worth more than the plane.
