Hello everybody,

Just saw this on Flight Global, Lufthansa and Munich's airport operator, FMG, have just approved plans to build a satellite building for T2.

Some details:

The satellite will be built on top of the existing baggage sorting hall which is located on the east apron 2. This facility currently sorts baggage for aircraft on remote stands.

An underground tunnel connection will be made to T2.

The Tunnel is already in place, however, it will be equipped with rail equipment for passenger transport.

The Satellite will add 52 gates and 27 jet bridges, one of which will be A380 capable. (this will double the number of usable gates at T2)

Actual passenger capacity will be increased by 11million through this project.

The existing baggage infrastructure is to be improved as an end stage of this project.

Total costs are about 650million euro (about 850 million dollars), with Lufthansa and the airport authority splitting the costs 40:60.

Operations from the satellite should begin in 2015.

I always wondered why they did not do something like this right from the beginning as all those aircraft parked on the east apron around the baggage facility need bus transfers from the terminal at the moment. I wasn't thinking of a proper terminal with lots of shops or facilities, more of a departure lounge building connected to the main terminal by a tunnel.

It was part of the planning from the beginning: the underground tunnels are already there and the planning was already approved when they built the first part of T2 - that is why they can start construction right away.
