There was probably a thread already covering this subject but since I couldn't find it, here it is:

AZ has already been selling their new FCO-GIG service on their website for a couple of months now but no request was publicly made to the brazilian ANAC (at least their request didn't show on their tables) but now it finally shows up:

EFF 01JUN11

AZA672 - FCO 20:30 - 05:40 GIG - WeSaSu - A332
AZA673 - GIG 14:45 - 05:10 FCO - MoThSu - A332

A 4th frequency (AZA672 on mondays and AZA672 on tuesdays) will be added in july.

This flight i believe will be a strong success ! Specially because of the current demand.
Interesting that the FCO-GIG flight appears on AZ website departing 22:30 but with same arrival time.

What AC will they use? Do they still have 767's? Can a 767 make it? I guess if can make FRA it should do Rome.

Also, JJ has a couple ex-767's. I think JJ renovated the interiors but I flew GIG TO JFK early on before the JJ update and WOW the AZ interior was the WORST interior and seats I'd ever seen! I actually didn't feel safe!

The world is missing love, let's use our flights to spread it!

Is it smart for Skyteam to start GIG with AF,KLand AZ at the same time? Wouldnt this dillute yields? Why not feed FCO from CDG or AMS for example?

Next trip : DUB-AUH-CGK-DPS-KUL-AUH-CDG-ORK :-)

The newly delivered A330-200s.

No, they were not renovated and most probably never will.

Because the Italy-GIG market is substantial. AZ has been losing passengers to other airlines, especially TP, for years.

It is because the traffic to Rio grow so much during the past 4 years since AF introduced the 2nd flight.
Norway is at least 5x bigger than 2006 and goes mostly on KL or JJ hands, also thru GRU. Same for some places in Asia such as MNL (where KL is strong) Italy as mentioned by Coiote has seen also good increase, and many other countries now have bigger activity with Rio, and AF/KL/AZ wants to capture it because they know the market better than any other airline in Europe (LH group does not fly to Rio, BA/IB have a small presence).
Rumors says also that AF will introduce 772 service on the daylight CDG-GIG, with First Class for IATA winter 2011/2012.
Oil explains a lot... Rio is attracting 15 prime R&D centers for oil & gas (including the 2nd largest by GE, solely for oil & gas + energy), just to show part of the traffic expectations for the future.
TAM added 8 weekly flights this year, and they mentioned "routes become mature immediately" which is a clear sign of strong demand. Next year so far we will have just 4 and AF will reduce the seat offer (replacing the 744 with 436 seats by 77W with 391 seats). JJ is expected to make FRA-GIG daily.

Now they run it with one of the newest A332 with mood light, cameras to see ahead of the plane and below the plane, more AVOD options.

Lipe you are right. I messed up with the time difference. So consider:

AZA672 - FCO 22:30 - 05:40 GIG - WeSaSu - A332
AZA673 - GIG 14:45 - 07:10 FCO - MoThSu - A332

Indeed. It's beyond me why didn't BA increase LHR-GIG to at least 5x weekly redeye both ways. I see LHR-GIG being stronger than LHR-EZE but BA separated EZE from GRU with a redeye service already and more frequencies so slots at LHR apparently are not the issue.

If only VS FINALLY came down to Rio...

Not a problem, daylight savings are difficult when considering different countries.

And it seems to me that JJ will increase service on GIG-LHR before BA... JJ probably will make GIG-LHR 4x or 5x weekly as soon as they got 2 new A332. Not only BA but also IB... both have mixed eyes out of Rio.
With the fact that LHR-GRU will become a terminator service, BA probably will not upgrade GIG before the Winter season 2011/2012.
