Wishing you Season's Greetings from MEA - Cedar Miles to you and your family!

We take this opportunity to inform you that MEA will be joining SkyTeam soon and in this regards, Cedar Miles wants to change the names of its top Tiers from Prestige to Elite and from Elite to Elite Plus (same benefits remain).

Your contribution and opinion are highly appreciated and if you have any other suggestions, we would be more than happy if you could share them with us, by simply sending us an email to kayssis@mea.com.lb .

Warmest and sincere wishes for Christmas and New Year.

Your Cedar Miles Team

Received this email 3 hours ago from Cedar Miles. Quite random but also expected. It was mentioned recently by the chairman in an interview but it sounded more like a possibility than something waiting to happen.

Great news for all involved. Sky Team will pull MEA further, and MEA will do them well in the Middle East.

There will come a time when you believe everything is finished - that will be the beginning.

Congratulations to ME! So, I understand the F.F. issue has been resolved then. If I am not mistaken someone posted on a.net some time ago that AF insisted that ME adopted the Flying Blue program as a condition to joining, but it appears ME will keep its own.

It is good to see SkyTeam gaining strength in the Middle East with SV and ME. SV strikes me as a bit of an odd choice, but I am definitely happy to see the alliance grow.

I got this e-mail too. I wish they join soon. I am surprised though that some miles I accrued back in 2005 (11,000) are expiring on 12/31/2010. Not sure how best to use them. I thought of purchasing a ticket BEY-Larnaca, or BEY-AMM which covers these miles. Any suggestions.

In most carriers, if you buy, say, 1000 miles, the expiration date of the miles in your balance will be extended. Or you could take a flight so you earn more miles, and then the old ones will not expire.

Not really. That's because the alliances would not want the big Gulf carriers to join because they would conflict with existing members so SV is a good alternative. Saudi Arabia has a large population with quite a number of wealthy residents who would be able to use other Skyteam members (besides SV) for their global trips.

They already can and without all the added costs of alliance membership. I would expect SV has interline ticketing agreements with most SkyTeam members and most other major carriers worldwide.

I don't really see how SV would benefit from alliance membership as they already control a significant percentage of traffic to/from/within Saudi Arabia.

This was announced by MEA in early November:

http://www.mea.com.lb/English/Corpor...Pages/PressDetails.aspx?pressid=68

Here's an article in Flight Global from October, before MEA's announcement:

Middle East Airlines chief executive Mohamad El-Hout says his carrier is expanding, growing its fleet to 17 over the next two years, as it steps up frequencies in some markets. "People are putting a lot of capacity in and if you don't fly two flights a day you are out of the market," he says.

MEA's stalled move into SkyTeam appears to be gaining pace as it is now being lined up for full membership, enabling it to keep its frequent flyer scheme. This was the major impasse and it could now join in 2012.

Oh, I agree with you on those. My comment was because I don't think Saudi Arabia is a convenient country for connections.

Maybe you can call and ask them to renew them or something, or ask them about other options.

This comes from the fact that previously, MEA was suppsed to join Skyteam as an associate member. In this case, the alliance rule was that the associate member had to use the FFP of their sponsor airline. AF was the sponsor of MEA ==> MEA had to change its FFP for Flying Blue. MEA did not want to do that so their entry in Skyteam was "frozen" since that. But the associate member status has now disappeared and all members are "full members" without restrictions on the FFP.

Then one would say that both UX and KQ have been disadvantaged since they lost their FF program to be part of SkyTeam? Would they re-install their previous program now they are 'full members"?

I don't think it would make sense for UX and KQ to reinstate their old programs. For starters, on the practical level, it would be an operational nightmare. Which frequent flyers would be transferred to the new/old program? And how many miles would they be given? Plus, I am sure the AF-KL group would not agree to that.

True it would not make sense now the change has already gone through and a waste of time and money. Whats done is done.

+1 they were iconic. The new MEA has alot to offer SkyTeam though their A330's are very nice and even offer a better onboard experience than AF.

Here is my TR showing the Y class product:

MEA have some interesting African routes which they can also open up to other SkyTeam members, that and the expansion of BEY should bring MEA to another level.

There will only be formal announcements from Skyteam when the contracts are signed (or to be signed).

Only official Press Release from MEA regarding SkyTeam membership came after isit of AF CEO to BEY.

MEA to become a full member of Skyteam

02 November 2010

On the occasion of their visit to Lebanon, a delegation of Air France headed by Mr. Pierre-Henry Gourgeon, CEO of Air France, met with a delegation of Middle East Airlines Air Liban , headed by Mr. Mohamad El-Hout Chairman- Director General of Middle East Airlines on 1st of November.

Both delegations reviewed the present state of their bilateral cooperation, and celebrated the 12th anniversary of a mutually rewarding codeshare partnership between Beirut and Paris.

During the meeting, Mr. El Hout confirmed that the Board of Middle East Airlines has approved his proposition that MEA should officially plan to become a Full member of Skyteam Global Alliance.

Mr. Pierre-Henry Gourgeon received this information with great pleasure and committed that Air France would sponsor and support Middle East Airlines in this endeavour.

No way MEA will replace CDG fro AMS. The only destination which must fear for its service is BRU, though if theis market on its own right I wouldn´t see why MEA should stop flying to BRU.

Well, I think kl911 meant to ask whether in addition to CDG, ME would also launch nonstop service to AMS. Clearly CDG is the bread and butter of MEA, so there is no question BEY-CDG is staying (who knows, frequencies may even be increased at some point). It might make sense, however, to also serve the other Air France KLM Groupe major hub in Europe once the carrier joins the alliance.

I agree with you. I think also the code-share agreement betwen MEA and AC will be terminated as soon as MEA joins Sky. It's better to add frequency to CDG or open AMS to funnel pax to YUL rather than connecting in GVA to an airline of another alliance.

Without the Beirut passengers I think that the GVA route would not be viable. As at least 1/3rd of the passengers seem to be connecting traffic.

However, who provides the most pax AC on the MEA flight or MEA on the AC flight? Cross alliance codesharing is not uncommon (KL still codeshares with Copa ex Panama), thus AC may still be codesharing with MEA when it enters Skyteam. The only thing I don't understand why you first sign a codeshare deal with an airline from Star (SN) and then publicly say you would go for Skyteam alliance.
