No press release or anything anywhere yet but Delta.com is showing 3x CRJs starting in April

PVD-DCA 0700 1015 and1820

DCA-PVD (Arriving) 0945 1750 and 2200

It appears these flights came from BOS-DCA

This will be nice competition on a route that has seen a sharp increase in airfares in recent years. DCA has always been a solid performer from PVD with US usually having equal or more capacity on DCA than whats offered in the larger BDL market.

With more added capacity, 2011 should be the year PVD turns the corner. This will bring Delta to 15 daily flights come May

Anything DL-DCA related has to be looked at from a DL-US-DCA-LGA perspective.
We'll see how it all shakes out at some point.

Question Conventional Wisdom. While not all commonly held beliefs are wrong…all should be questioned.

Interesting. I had reason to do DCA-PVD out Sunday evenings, returning midday Fridays on 11 occasions this year, mainly in the summer and early fall months on US (RP) E75s. Loads were usually in the 65-85% range. Maybe that's due to higher fares (I was always connecting in DCA so I couldn't tell) but those kind of loads don't beg for 150 or so more seats per day. Still, DL has a decent DCA presence so maybe they'll be able to fill them or stimulate demand on both to increase loads.

The average fare for Q2 2010 for US on PVD-DCA was $272 e/w... thats an average of abour $600 out of pocket r/t for a 1 hour flight. Not to mention over 200 passengers per day (US@ DCA only) were paying those fares.

Also makes sense that Delta shifted these flights down from BOS since US and B6 are trashing the yeilds there.

GREAT news. DL seems to be creating a very nice presence for themselves in PVD lately.

Glad to hear this. I fly PVD-BWI frequently, and Southwest's aircraft are almost always filled to capacity. Washington DC and its metro area seem to be popular from the Providence and southeastern parts of Mass. If fares are good enough, I might consider flying into DCA over BWI.

PVD-DCA is a much more appropriate use of a CRJ compared to PVD-ATL which is what it was a few years ago (now its back to MD88s)

DL will also begin 1x daily CHS-DCA flights the same day.

These 4 new flights will be funded via a reduction from 12 to 8 on the DCA-BOS route. The same day, E75s will also replace mainline on the 2x daily DCA-MIA/TPA routes and on 2 of the 4 DCA-MCO routes.

I do the same. SW has conquered PVD and they use it in lieu of Logan. It will hopefully ease congestion at Logan too. I would be nice to see less regional aircraft to PVD but its not a real big airport.

For the most part the 50 seat RJs have been replaced with larger equipment

Only markets with 50 seaters are EWR, DTW, DCA (1 of 5 on US), PHL (2 of 8) and IAD in the winter only (2 of 4). LGA and YYZ are the only prop routes aside from 9K in the summer.

No surprise on these reductions. The MD88's were way too big. Of course, all of these routes will get the axe if the slot swap ever goes through.

And yet WN also serves BOS from BWI...

I wonder if any of these flights might switch to CR7's by the time the flights start in April? The BDL-DCA DL flights are currently showing CRJ's too and they've been CR7's since they started them up from what I can recall.

US Navy, government contractors etc. who fill a lot of seats back and forth to DCA will now have a potentially cost saving choice on that route. Additionally some Southern MA DCA passengers, previously siphoned to BOS may creep back.

PVD has historically leaked passengers via BOS to places like NYC and WASH. The Acela, hourly shuttles, and price variation are the top causes. I hope this will provide a sliver of relief on 2 of those; being the schedule and the fares.

Between US & DL, there will now be 8 decently spaced choices:

0610 US
0700 DL
0925 US
1015 DL
1150 US
1700 US
1820 DL
1850 US

US used to have a 1430 departure which is the only glaring hole in this schedule.

I'm just so glad DL saw that there was an opportunity here. Maybe they will look at JFK for summer European connections?
