On 9/1, WN will open a new 10,000 square foot provisioning area in MSY. Southwest is looking to expand service here. In October, they will add an additional nonstop to DAL and FLL, making the total daily departures 60. Look for additional expansion in the near term. Perhaps we'll finally see MSY-MDW, a route that is sorely needed.

It would be nice to finally have a nonstop between Columbus and New Orleans, a route I'm sure Southwest could operate profitably. It looks like WN will acquire a third gate at CMH, so hopefully with the expansion at both CMH and MSY, it might give the airline the initiative to start the route.

I have been waiting for a CMH-MSY route for a long time. I think a daily WN nonstop, or two HP Express CRJ's on the route could do quite well. I think we'll see that route being flown nonstop in a year or so. I have never been to CMH, but I hope to one day.

Looks like WN is making a hub out of MSY, or they are coming there. Their operation at MSY is excellent. Yes, MDW-MSY is sorely needed. My dad had to fly MSY-BHM-MDW without a change of A/C. I think MDW-MSY would make a huge profit.

The SW provisioning center will take up part of the new perishables center that we completed building a couple of years ago. Customs maintains an office there, as does a company that does refrigeration and contract manages the building (the name escapes me).

As for SW expansion, I would look to see MSY-MCI, and MSY-MDW as the next new routes. As far as CMH goes, all I hear are America West Express rumors, and it's been a while since I heard those.

Tom In NO,
I was wondering does WN use those two "empty" gates in the B Concourse at MSY? These have older jetbridges and empty podiums. I was walking around the B terminal and I noticed this.

Thanks In Advance

I think you're talking about B-11 and B-6. America West has been known to use B-11, and I seem to recall seeing some SW overload on B-6.

BTW. With DL starting up MSY-JFK in the midst of JetBlue starting up the same route, it's looking like GAC will do JB's ground handling instead of DL. I'm not sure of the gate yet, but it may be D-1.

Yes, thats right, AWA has B11. I remember seeing an Airbus there. Also, while taxing away from the terminal on a NW flight, I saw a former gate (No jetway now) at the end of "A" Concourse. That is where I took an AA 727 flight in 1997. AA gave this up for USAirways? I noticed they got part of "C" Concourse now, and have a new stairwell for Midway. I didn't know jetBlue might possibly use a D gate. I thought they would get a gate in the "C" Concourse. Also, what is the procedure for U.S. Customs? Do they unload via stairs and go to a Customs on the ground level. I have always been curious to this while in MSY. Thanks for the information on my last post.

To answer Co LITE's questions:

1) the gate at the end of A is vacant. NW had a DC-9 parked there the other day performing an engine change.

2) to access US Customs on concourse C, pax deplane via the jetways into the terminal as normal. Just inside the doorway to the terminal is a second doorway. This doorway is left open during domestic flights. During int'l flights the door is locked shut, and pax are detoured onto an escalator inside that takes them down to the Customs corridor.
