For some reason, several widebodies converged upon MSN a couple of days ago:

UAL 744, ORD-MSN : http://flightaware.com/live/flight/U...8/history/20101229/1635Z/KORD/KMSN
DAL 777 ATL-MSN: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/D...3/history/20101230/2125Z/KATL/KMSN
Two separate World MD11s: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/WOA9304

Three Ryan 763s:
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/R...4/history/20101229/2005Z/KLAX/KMSN
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/R...5/history/20101229/2135Z/KLAX/KMSN
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/R...6/history/20101229/2250Z/KLAX/KMSN

Each of them went on to depart to LAX. Does anyone have any idea why MSN needed so much LAX lift?

My understanding is 2 747's were University Chartered flights (team, band, UW officials, etc). All the other's are commercial charters for people attending the Rose Bowl.

Have a great day,

Ah, of course. I suppose it might have actually paid off to follow professional sports in this case!

Any idea when the charters will be returning to MSN? It might make for some interesting photo opportunities.

For most sports charters they usually tend to return either immediately after the game or early the next day. Especially for the UA 747 and the DL 777 because I'm pretty sure they need them back into the rotation for Monday as possible. So kick off is around 2pm on the first so, the first group should be coming back i say either some time late Saturday night (the first), early Sunday morning (the second) leaning more to Sunday morning.

Oh man, I'm very envious of your access to nice vantage points! MSN is a frustrating airport for those of us without ramp access.

Nice shots, too...I especially like that first 744 shot. Very nice!

College sports, not professional.... Of course it is hard to tell the difference between the two anymore.

The game is Saturday evening so some might come back Saturday night but would guess most will come back Sunday. It's gonna be crazy at MSN.

because it was in the old colors, I would say that the UA 747 is in no hurry to get anywhere, because its in the old livery we know its got the old interior in it so they would only run it domestically after that.

I would bet it would go back out for some sun after this is done.

Agreed, although the MD11 shot is nice too. Must have been a logistical nightmare for the airport, between the volume of people, fuel and bags. Madison is a capable airport, but that is a lot of heavy metal in a small space.

Can't wait for all of the charters to come back after the game, especially those 744s and MD-11s. For UW-Badgers and Madison based A.netters it really doesn't get any better than this weekend!

Someone please explain how UA plans the scheduling for something like this. It was my understanding that they were stretched for widebody capacity. Also, I would expect that the aircraft used outbound would go back into passenger service immediately and they would pull a different tail out of service for the return trip.

These flights must be a blast! Anybody been on one?

DL did their own and the UA 744 for sure. Delta has ground equipment capable. MSN was a diversion station and also got numerous NW widebodies for sports charters throughout the year.

It went on to do an extra-section from LAX to JFK and back. It is in the old configuration.

Looks like winds will be favoring 18 on Sunday. The small road north of the field is lined with "No Parking" signs. Are there any decent spots to capture 18 arrivals?

The band rode a DL 747, and the team took a DL A330. The UAL 747 had the governor and some UW officials.

On a sidenote, the DL 777, and 2 757's weren't charters per se, but rather extra sections to LAX (as in you could book them like a normal flight).

All through the day on Sunday. Literally. IIRC, band comes back on 1/3.

Maybe, maybe not? I'd think so too, but it seems like they've been using it for upgauges over the last few weeks.

It was well choreographed. Except for the UAL 747 going tech, most all went off w/o a hitch. MSN recently expanded the south end of the ramp for extra parking, and, as it turns out, the new area can hold a whale with room to spare.

Quoting penguinflies (Reply 15):

No loaders or cans. All bulk loaded. ZW and AE each handled a World MD-11. ZW did the UAL 747 and SY flights. AE handled 3x Ryan air 767's. DL handled their own metal, WN, and LL (and a G4 diversion just for good measure). DL pushed all the WB flights, since they have the only push back rated high enough to do so.

There's a VFW up the road a little bit... Maybe there? Not sure; you'd have to check it out to see if it'd work. Other than that maybe the top of the parking garage w/a good zoom lens? I'd just park on CV... What's the worst that can happen? They ask you to move?

Also, if you want "at the gate" shots, you can go down by the taxi stand. You'll be shooting through a cyclone fence, but you'll still be fairly close.
