Greetings Aviation fans. I wish all of you a peaceful and a happy 2011.

2010 has been a very busy year for Turkish Aviation and also for our threads. Thanks all for participating and keeping these threads informative and fun.

Looking ahead into 2011 we have few things to look forward to;

-TK to buy rest of B and H airlines
-TK ordering 787/350 finally this year? After 5 years of talking about it?
-Could we see a 380 decision earlier? You never know
-A final decision, and beginning of construction of a new airport in Istanbul?
- 2011 will bring brand new 319, 321, 738, 739, 77W, 332, 332F, 333 to TK, am I missing something? I am sure like few more ATRs or who knows what.
-Will TK finally let go the ex Jet 77Ws and say goodbye to F class?
-What will rising oil prices do to the expansion plans for TK?
-Talking about expansion, I lost track of new cities. Let's say another 10; two more cities in Spain, one more in Italy, LAX, MNL, SKG, more cities in Iraq and Iran. Maybe Montreal or Sydney??

By the way, the latest TK 77W is painted and ready to go at KPAE for few days now, can't read the name. Also by now three cities should be getting the 77W with comfort class full time; PEK, GRU, YYZ.

Last not but not least, how about the other players? Can Borajet survive with only two ATRs? Turkuaz gone? What will happen to 330s of other airlines since SV is getting their own? Pegasus or Onur to go Long Haul??

I hope to see you all with your news, rumors and usual sense of humor.

Turkuaz gone?

Incidentally, three ex-Turkuaz A320s were ferried to DUB very recently (possibly today), to be repainted for the next customer (whoever that will be).

2010 has certainly been a very interesting and successful year for Turkish Airlines and I can only hope there is great success ahead in 2011; of course there will be challenges (and if there aren't enough, we'll gladly swap some of ours!), but Turkish Airlines seems to have great momentum and is certainly among the more exciting airlines to watch nowadays, given the investment in its fleet and expansion of its network.

I guess the big question for most airlines is, will it finally enter service in 2011, after three years of delays!

Good luck for 2011 everyone!

Would be a shame but it seems it never went the way it was planned.

I flew SAW to CIT (Shymkent, Kazakhstan) last month on Deta Air's weekly IL-62M Combi service. One of the Flight Crew told me that the aircraft would be converted to a freighter and that from 01JAN, the pax flight would operate separately using a B737. Can anyone verify what is now operating the flight?

Anadolujet is starting Ankara "ESB" to London Stansted "STN" on 28 Januray 2010. This is going to be a year round service. The service will be twice weekly on Fridays and Sundays. The non-stop service between Ankara and London will increase in the summer timetable.

The route is being reinstated by Anadolujet when BD suspended ESB LHR direct flights on 28 October 2008.

Anadolujet will offer transfers from Ankara to many domestic destinations as well a limited number of international destinations via Ankara. This is a good option for budget travellers who want to avoid delays and hassle at IST.

The need for premium service between Ankara and Heathrow is still there. With TK utilizing Anadolujet for this sector, BA or BD should reconsider the route to be able to offer connections exLHR.

Anadolujet is also expecting landing rights to launch direct service between Ankara and Dubai soon.

If it makes TK787 a reality, I could care less whoever begs whom to get what or if it was a totally political decision.

Hamdi Tpocu talking

Talking about numbers, TK does that a lot.
This guy is a financial adviser (mali musavir), I would expect him to be a bit more specific with his numbers. Let me give two examples;
- He says "We would like to fly to "EVERY COUNTRY" in Africa by 2012". Then he says, now TK flies to 17 destinations in Africa, we will increase this number to "at least" 35. 35 countries does not equal every country in Africa by 2012 since there are 54 sovereign states in Africa according to Wikipedia. Still it will be an incredible achievement if TK will EVER fly to 35 destinations in Africa let alone in 2012. He keeps forgetting the situation at IST, whereas a.netters won't.
-He says they have all the strategic plans ready till 2023. On the other hand he doesn't give a specific number to how many planes TK will operate by the end of next year. ("180-200 planes by the end of 2011"). Again, doesn't TK have to plan ahead for gates, crews, maintenance, fuel, scheduling....before a possible jump in capacity of 10%. Baha mentioned before how these numbers always seem to be round. (never 181-203)

Hey, I just saw the bday cake logo next to my name and realized it is my fifth a.net Bday today, way cool

All African flights, including the newly introduced East and West African ones are almost always full. I reckon the yields are also very good. So it does make sense for TK to expand throughout Africa. East mainly to connect to Europe and North America and West to Middle East and Asia....

As far as remember, US have a a plan for non safe airports. Passengers from these airports wont accepted directly US airports, they should screen in a safe airport. I guess EU countries don't want to deal pakistani passengers and pakistanis may choose Turkey over EU because here is muslim country.

But how it is possible to handle all these passengers in IST, I can not imagine.

Elal left IST few years back. Yes, TK HEL flights are going from daily to 10 x weekly.

About TK and Africa;
-Here are the 17 cities TK is flying to:
JNB, Cairo, CPT, CMN, LOS, NBO, ALG, TUN, ADD, TIP, Dares Salaam, Benghazi, Alexandria, DKR, Accra, Khartoum, Entebbe

-Here is another possible list of 13 cities which can be reached with 738s;
Sharm el sheikh, Hurghada, MIR, ABV, Marakkesh, Djerba, Luxor, ORN, AGA, Marsa alam, Aswan, TNG, Rabat

-With the introduction of 739ER the list can go to;
Point Noire, Port Hart Court, Abdijan, Lusaka, Zanzibar, Libreville

Any other city in Africa beyond 3500nm from IST might not be profitable since it will require a widebody, by the way there are not a whole lot of them.

The point I am trying to make is this; When Mr. Topcu says TK wants to fly to at least 35 destinations in Africa by 2012 this is what the picture will look like; TK might be flying to 8 cities in Egypt, 5 in Morocco, 3 in Nigeria and so on. Not only there will be bilateral issues bu most of these busier cities are tourist destinations (TK would rather have transfer pax instead of Turkish tourists visiting Luxor). Also 35 cities mean, TK flying to airports in Africa with passenger base as small as Konya, Elazig, Kars or even smaller.

On the other hand, I am sure there is a lot of money to be made. Most of these African flights are red eyes, so planes can be used at night instead of sitting at IST. Most of the pax will be connecting, so that is where the money will come from. And also let's not forget the cargo.

I am sure I made some assumptions and mistakes with the above, I would like to hear your comments.
