When I was a kid, I remember Wien Air Alaska flying into PHX in the early '80s. At first, they flew in 727-100s, but later flew in 737-200s. I believe they flew to Salt Lake City, but I'm not real sure. Does anybody know where their hub was, were all they flew, and what brought about their demise? It seems like Wien was an airline that faded into sunset without leaving a legacy.

Once flew them - as a small boy. But you´re right - the compagny just faded. As far as I know most of their operations took place in Alaska with a limited network to the State of Washington, Oregon and maybe a few other states in the northern part. Salt Lake seems a bit "too far" away but I can´t tell. Anyway another compagny that just went away.

For the memories, here is a shot of a Wien Air 727 that I shot at PHX back in September of 84.

Found some interesting websites.

Here is a nice shot of a Wien 73S at Terminal 3 at PHX.

My first memory of Wien was in Alaska, and in the mid-60's they were operating several Pilatus Turbo Porters from various locations, serving small remote communities.I believe they also had a few Fokker (or Fairchild?) F-27's,too.
You're right,it just faded away!

They may have faded away down south but up here the "Flood of 84" was still pretty big news.

I am so glad that I don' hear anything about James Flood getting back in the airline buisness after that.

Wien's hubs were Seattle and Anchorage. In the early to mid 80's they were at PDX, OAK, PHX, SLC, RNO plus a host of Alaska cities. I think they may have gone to DEN as well.

Here's another good website dedicated to the gone but not forgotten airlines of Alaska, including Wien Air Alaska.
