Continental's 737-800/900 W/ Mid Cabin Lav

Just read the press release announcing the delivery of CO's first 737-900.

Anyways the 737-900s and all new deliver 737-800s will feature a 4th mid-cabin lav. For the 738 the seating config shifts from 14F/141Y to 18F/132Y.

So my questions: how many CO 738's currently feature this setup, and how soon will the entire fleet be retrofitted with the new interiors.
Secondly what was the reason behind this move? Obviously there are more premium seats, but with fewer seats in coach, why the extra can?

From what I read, CO is just now getting their first -800 with the mid-cabin lav, and they plan to convert one plane a week until the fleet is completely retrofitted...

The new lav carries with it a small weight penalty, but the refit was very much necessary due to the config of the current aft lavs -- they are forward of the galley, meaning that the F/As can't get the carts out when there's a line!

My understanding is as follows: When CO initated long-haul (transcon) services with the 738 (e.g. EWR-LAX), many passenger complained about long lines for the lavs (especially after in-flight films ended). This was the subject of a Wall Street Journal article and several other stories. The extra lav is not for the Premium cabin, but rather, as Flashmeister stated, is in part to facilitate movement by FAs. Those in the first 10 rows of coach will benefit the most. Regards.

I just think that CO is adjusting the configuration of its 738s to the needs of its pax and the needs of its crew - the 738 simply did not have enough lavs for the number of pax, especially when considering that these planes were operating many flights of 4 to 5 hours in duration where most pax make at least one visit to the facilities. The new conifiguation, with a lav at mid-cabin, will make it easier and more comfortable for all concerned.

Thanks for the replies... but since there are not seat maps up for the new 737-800/900 config, could you tell me where the lav is located? I would assume immediately after the overwing exit rows, but that is just my guess.

These are most definitely needed. I flew a CO 738 BWI-IAH and back on Tuesday, and in both directions, there were long lines for the lavs. I was sitting in the last row (29), so I saw it first-hand.
