In a speech to the Connecticut General Assembly, Governor Dan Malloy said the Bradley International Airport will become an "independent entity". I'm just wondering what other US airports have transitioned to independent entities recently, and what differences (minor/major) there may be with what it is now which is a state-run airport I believe.

Quote:
We will make Bradley International Airport an independent entity, freeing it to better grow its passenger base.

Right now I believe it is run by the state DOT. I dont believe that they will privitize the airport but rather create a independnt public agency to oversee the airport, sort of like an airport authority which is fairly common.

This would be akin to Massport running Logan Airport. I believe such a move was discussed recently, but I guess this makes it official.

I'm not sure I understand the difference.

Most airports I fly through (ORD being the notable exception) are managed as part of some sort of dedicated public organization with either taxing authority or dedicated funding.

So in the absence of the State of Connecticut, who will be funding Bradley day-to-day?

An airport of that side should be self sufficent. It mostly cuts it free of the DOT red tape while remaining a public asset.

PVD used to be run by the RIDOT but they created the Rhode Island Airport Corporation which now oversees all airports in the state. They do not take state funds, but the state can be used to back bonds. Employees are also not state employees
