A new year and thus a new Russian Aviation thread!
Some news to kick-start the new thread.
The DME-JFK route by UN is apparently not doing too well as it has been reduced to 2 weekly from 01 FEB. The winter season for RUS-USA traffic is always hard and once again confirmed.
And one of the more surprising new routes, UTair will launch daily VKO-HAJ on CR2 in direct competition with Germanwings.
UT721 VKO1110 – 1210HAJ CRJ D
UT722 HAJ1305 – 1805VKO CRJ D http://airlineroute.net/2011/01/10/ut-vkohaj-s11/

Thanks for this thread! I am not Russian (although I am trying to learn the language), but I have a very good friend who is, so I have become interested in Russian aviation of late. I enjoyed the last thread and I'm sure this one will be just as interesting. Now I just have to start saving so I can go visit her sometime soon!

That is a mighty long route for a CR2. Imagine three hours inside the flying skidoo.
AB will increase from 28APR TXL-LED to 13 weekly from the current 7 weekly.
The new flight:
AB8486 TXL 2130 - 0140 LED x6
AB8487 LED 0705 - 0720 TXL x7 http://www.russia-ic.com/news/show/11379/
Does anyone happen to know which tour operator/travel agents are selling flights on this route? I've just checked the SU website and fares are over €500 o/w, so I'm assuming it's being run essentially as a charter flight.

As much as it does link S7 and AB, I'm guessing the above will be almost all O&D. Do AB even have any flights arriving early enough on Sunday morning into TXL to connect into this?

Indeed, they aim at this I believe as well, and they aim on the Russian community around Berlin which is large as well.
Don't forget that the economies of the large Siberian cities are growing quite fast, tourism is booming as well. OVB is the third city of Russia (population wise) and S7 is able to get feed from China and eastern Russia for this flight.
The number of Germany - Siberia flights amazes me, even to cities such as HAJ and OMS.

That is in process, first signs are becoming visible with Rossiya (FV) flying some weekly SVO-SXF flights to optimize aircraft utilization and Nordavia (5N) will be sold to Norilsk Nickel so that FV will be the only SU subsidiary to focus on North & North-Western Russia.

Looks like the 17th is the doom's day.
Everyone knew it was coming.
Actually it was literally written on airplanes: airline of the government of Moscow.
UTair definitely deserves expansion.
It's a well-run company - and supported by oil/gas region.
In a way UTair reminds me of North-West Airlines - it always tried to live within its means.

YYZ-DME Does anyone know % loads, on the route, flying in april to OVB but the week before flight already soldout! Could we see an upgrade to the new 777 coming? fingers crossed. Read on earlier threads that the new 7-3 will also be used on domestic routes, OVB has to be one of them as only VVO, IKT are farther, maybe a stopover.

UN flies domestically to many more destinations which are farther than OVB. They have many flights to the Russian Far East and Eastern Siberia (UUS, VVO, KHV etc) which warrant the 773 more than OVB which is only a 3:30 hour flight.

but OVB is a city with over 1.6 million people, the 3rd largest in russia, it deserves a widebody, OVB-DME flight time is 4 hours, 5 minutes witch is pretty much the limit of the 737, which is twice daily now.

I counted 6 direct flight from DME to OVB performed yesterday:
Ural Airlines, S7, UN.
2-3 flights a day from VKO does UTair.
And Aeroflot flies 2 times a day.
With 10 flights a day it's a competative market.
And - yes - frequency does matter.
Another reason: with IL-86 out there is no mid-range w/b aircraft.

Quoting transaeroyyz (Reply 20): All A320, 21, 737 flights, putt a 777 there then who would u fly, its a no brainer to capture that segment..
No, this makes no sense for the Moscow-Novosibirsk market. It is one of the most competitive domestic Russian routes.
Placing a regular 773 will kill all yield for UN. Keep in mind that just being the 3rd city in Russia doesn't warrant a wide-body whatsoever. The wide-bodies can currently be placed on much more profitable routes than Novosibirsk.
UN currently flies 12 weekly 734/735s between DME-OVB. They would first upgrade the frequency, or swap to a larger aircraft 738, Tu214) and only perhaps then we'll see a 772/773 on the DME-OVB.
And then I didn't elaborate yet on the importance of frequency.

OVB-DME isn't anywhere close to the limits of a 737.
OVB-DME is only 1739mi. The limits of the 737classics are around ~2,500mi, 737NG around ~>3,500mi.

Interesting news today from Sukhoi.
Quote: Mexico's second largest airline, Interjet, signed on Monday a $650 million deal with Superjet International to buy 15 regional Sukhoi Superjet 100 planes.
This is the first delivery contract for Russia's new type of Superjet airplanes to a Latin American country. Under the deal, Interjet may have the option to purchase five more planes.
The first deliveries of Superjet airplanes are expected in the second half of 2012.

I guess 14 frames in 2011 was a number "to see and watch".
If SSJ is close to specs and good service is provided - they will increaase production.
They have capicities: Ulyanosk plant (where paint job was is supposed to be done) is bagging for more.
If we get some stable flow of orders - they will be able to assign both plants for full production line.
