The lebanese carrier is to sign a deal to join the SkyTeam alliance next month, according to flightglobal

SkyTeam states that MEA will sign an agreement on 28 February which will enable it to start the process towards joining in 2012.

"Customers will benefit from increased access to and from the Middle East and Western Africa," the alliance adds. MEA operates to 30 destinations.

Excellent news for both ME and Skyteam.
Skyteam will have extensive presence in the ME.

For those who thought SV had it all, ME serves destinations in Africa and Irak that SV doesn't !

Awesome news. ME will add a great service to Skyteam and the hub in BEY will also be a nice fit!

MEA will definitely need to get the right airplanes if BEY could ever play a role of a hub in channeling pax to Iraq, Cyprus, Turkey, Egypt, etc....

But MEA will also benefit tremendously in accessing AZ, and OK's flights to connect pax through airports other than CDG.

There was a discussion around AMS's lack of service to BEY. I am sure we will eventually see AMS-BEY added (either by MEA or KL), but I think MEA should synchronize it regional network first

Wonderful news for MEA & Beirut.
The airport is perfectly positioned for passengers coming from Europe connecting to the Middle East & Africa.

The A330s are a good size for their long haul requirements to Africa, London & Paris. I think they also serve CPH. The A321s and A320s seem to do well on their short & medium haul segments - they certainly seem to fill them but I think it would be good to see a regional jet for higher frequency short haul feeder services. That would free up the A321s and A320s for more routes- perhaps a daily A321 service to AMS or even an A320 to MAD.

Great to have a clear date we knew it was coming but great to see its only a year away. Will give MEA time to sort out the finer elements. In terms of product MEA will out shine their senior members. With expansion construction at BEY it will open up more opportunities also.

Some welcome news for Lebanon in a time when not all the news is good at the moment.

Can you give an example of someone who was admitted after a few months ? It is quite normal for accession to an alliance to take 12-18 months from the date of the signing ... and we are in 2011 now , so 2012 doesn't seem too surprising to me .

I agree with you. The marketing, advertising, the merging of the FFplan and sorting out the finer details
of the agreement could easily take a year.

I am not sure I can. maybe because i felt some other who joined happened so quickly without me knowing the signed ablut a year earlier. E.G. Tarom & Vietnam Airlines, how long ago did they sign the agreement before they became full members? All I heard was they are members already.
