Talked with people running Emirates at Paris this weekend.
No progress on the issue of granting EK daily frequencies into CDG yet. Plenty of behind the scenes maneouvering going on though. Loads continue to be extremely strong. EK are filling up all classes (first in particular). Capacity restrictions prevent them from upgrading A330 to B777 on the 3 weekly flights. At the moment they can easily justify daily Paris freqs.
Flights out of Nice also showing resilience despite dropping of Comoros a year ago. Loads in the summer exceptioanlly strong (for obvious reasons).
Misc. news
UAE has signed air transport agreement with Mauritius, with a view to EK starting up there sometime in the near future. The agreement with Canada has also been signed. As part of this both Emirates and Gulf Air are permitted to fly to points in Canada.
Air Canada is considering strongly codeshares with EK out of LHR and various other European cities onto Dubai.

Emirates stopped flying to Comoros in January 2000 for safety reasons. EK flight ops. deemed Moroni Hahaya apt to be unsafe for night-time ops. Actually they were doing well commercially and will consider returning until they are more satisifed on the safety. Yes, the bulk of the traffic was Comorians from Nice and Paris.

GF-A330,
I know Emirates is planning to startup to Canada sometime in 2003/2004 once the A340-500s arrive. Toronto will be part of the 2nd wave of North America destinations. Flights will be non-stop from Dubai using the A340-500.
Don't know about Gulf Air. What've you heard ? I would think not in the near future.

GKirk,
Emirates is restricted to 3x weekly by the French govt. They have been clamouring for a daily frequency for over one and a half years, but the French govt. won't budge. In fact, Emirates have stated that they see this route developing into a 2x daily over the next couple of years, as part of a group of European destinations set to get the double daily ops.
That is why they have now told Airbus that they may consider ordering from their rival if Airbus doesn't make it clear to the French govt, how important EK's request is. In fact Emirates are ready to place a big order of A330s, some more 340-500s (possibly -600s) and A380s but will not do so until this Paris issue is resolved.
BTW, Air France will go straight from A310 to B777 on their CDG-DXB (surprise surpsie daily service !! ) in Dec this year.

Yeah the UAE should restrict AF's access. If any French pax needed to fly on a day that EK or AF didnt fly, they could fly EK to another Euro dest. and then connect onwards, say to MAN first, which I believe EK codeshare with BA, then onwards to CDG with BA.
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!

This deal is still happening, i think Emirates are trying to arrange for leasing companies to help them on this undertaking. From now, on the bulk of the new aircraft Emirates will acquire will be on leases.

Ahlan Emirates777,
I was wondering the same exact thing as other people here have pointed out.......why doesnt the emarati govt put restrictions on Air France flights..... is it because DXB has an open skies policy and any airline can come fly in and out as many times?? But the french are being ridiculous to say the least to send a daily B777 to DXB whereas they wont even let EK upgrade to a B777 3x weekly !
Masalama..

Vietnam Air also flies HAN-DXB-CDG 3 times a week and SGN-DXB-CDG 3 times a week. They have fifth freedom rights on the DXB-CDG flights.

AirafriqueDKR,
In fact Emirates stopped flying to Ho Chi Minh around 4 years ago because of Vietnam Air operating this service. They were doing a lot of the transfer traffic from SGN to CDG via DXB.
