Sadly it looks like things are going to get really, really bad in North Queensland tonight. They are making comparisons between Cyclone Yasi and Hurricane Katrina...
I've attached the Area Forecasts, TAFs (and METARs where available) for the affected areas, from Airservices Australia (Disclaimer: if you're flying, please obtain your own weather forecasts and reports and don't rely on what I am posting here).
For those who want help reading these, here is a quick guide. On the TAFs, the location identifier is followed by a six figure number, which is the date and time that the forecast was issues, in the format ddhhmm, followed by two four figure numbers, which are the start and end times of the validity of the forecasts, in the format ddhh/ddhh. All times are in UTC (local time in Queensland is UTC+10). Following this is wind, which is given as a three figure direction, followed by a two or three figure speed, and a gust where applicable. Next is visibility in metres (9999 indicates >10km). Next are weather conditions, then cloud, which is categorized as few, scattered, broken or overcast, then a 3 figure number which is cloud base in 100s of feet. There may be several changes, indicated by FMddhhmm (from a certain time), TEMPO ddhh/ddhh (periods lasting up to an hour during a certain time) or INTER ddhh/ddhh (periods lasting up to half an hour during a certain time), then in the same format as above. Finally there are temperatures and QNH for commencement time, and 3, 6 and 9 hours later. The METARs (called SPECIs where conditions are below alternate minima) use a similar style, with some differences. They are an observation as opposed to a forecast (although those marked TTF also provide a three hour forecast considered more accurate than the TAF). after the cloud bases, temperature and dew point are given as two numbers separated by a slash, then the QNH, then rainfall for the last 10 minutes and since 9am separated by a slash. Some are issued automatically and may indicate missing information with slashes. I hope this helps!
A couple of points I noted: the winds forecast for Cairns from 9pm local time Is 160° 100 knots, gusting to 140 knots (that's 180km/h gusting to 250km/h)! The very last METAR in the list is for Willis Island, which appears to have been in the eye of the storm at the time of the METAR (based on what I saw on its weather radar when i was gathering this information). Note the nil wind, ~100% humidity (temperature and dew point both 27°) and very low pressure of 938hPa.

I'll provide updated forecasts this evening to give a clearer picture of what is going on.
In terms of civil aviation, I definitely wouldn't be too keen on having an aircraft sitting on the ground in 100 knot plus winds - I hope people have managed to get their aircraft out. More broadly, I hope the people of North Queensland can pull through this difficult time. Countless prayers and thoughts are no doubt with them at the moment...

Quote: Qantas Cyclone Yasi Update
Sydney, 02 February 2011
Qantas has suspended flights to and from Cairns and Townsville airports until Friday 4 February following the closure of both airports today in response to Tropical Cyclone Yasi.
In light of the extreme weather conditions expected in northern Queensland over the next 24 to 48 hours, Qantas will not operate flights to and from either airport today (2 February) or tomorrow (3 February). Qantas is monitoring weather patterns in the region closely and will make further operational decisions as the circumstances require.
On Tuesday 1 February, Qantas provided six additional flights from Cairns to Brisbane to assist with evacuation efforts. Extra capacity was also provided out of Townsville.
Fare waiver options are available for Qantas customers holding bookings for flights to and from airports in the affected regions. These are listed on the Major Disruptions section of qantas.com and will be reviewed regularly.
Qantas is working closely with the Queensland Government and will provide as much as assistance as possible to affected communities over the coming days. During the recent flooding in Queensland, Qantas increased capacity for regional areas and uplifted emergency services personnel and emergency freight, as well as offering considerable fundraising assistance.

Here are the latest ARFORs, TAFs and METARs for the affected area. The forecast wind for Cairns has reduced somewhat compared to this morning's forecast, I assume reflecting the fact the centre of the system is likely to pass somewhat to the south of Cairns. Still doesn't look pretty.
