Have there been any talks of restoring flights between SJC and any Canadian city, possibly YVR. I've always thought WestJet would be a great fit for SJC. Any thoughts?

Now that DL has an agreement with WestJet, I'm sure something can be arranged.

I'm talking about non-stop flights, not codeshares or partnerships.

WS seems to be pretty aggressive with US (transborder) expansion these days so I'd say it just depends on how they are doing at SFO and whether or not they see the need for another airport to serve the Bay Area. (I think their service in and out of SFO is only seasonal and only to YYC so that may tell us something about their presence in the area.)

They are just about to start serving SNA, so they will serve 2 of the airports in the LA-area (plus PSP if you want to include that one as well) so, depending on how that venture turns out, maybe that supports some positive thoughts about their future in the Bay Area...

???

How does the launching of an interline agreement materially alter the chances of WS serving a city like SJC?

How would a DL arrangement affect any WS decisions on SJC. Are you sure you didn't misread this for SLC?

I know both AS and AA and the old Canadian Pacific (F28's) served YVR at one time and AC served YYZ. I think the market is there and SJC could be a good connection point for Hawaii and Austin.

WS already serves Hawaii from YVR, YYC, and YEG. So using SJC as a connection point for that seems pretty unlikely.

More than likely WS will do some YYC and YVR flights to SLC.

..and WS wouldn't be able to sell tickets on the SJC-Hawai'i segment because of cabotage if I'm reading regulations correctly.

Don't forget that both QQ and OC flew SJC-YVR.

When AC started YYZ-SJC service was just before the dot.com sector bombed and that was the end of AC @ SJC. Since WS is a lower cost operation, I could see them starting SJC-YYZ with 73Gs and if there's a market for it, SJC-YVR/YYC with 736s to start.
It definitely would be great to see some more new service @ SJC.

I don't really see this happening right away. SJC is too concerned right now with trying to get any carrier to fill the AA void on the SJC-NRT route. Mayor and airport personnel were in Tokyo last week trying to drum up a flight.

I'm pretty sure getting Canadian routes will be easier than Japanese ones, but that being said, I don't think Mayor Reed or any airport/city official would be opposed to WS or AC filling some slots at SJC. Baby steps, baby steps.

As LACA said the majority of SJC service to Canada was during the dot.com boom. As the era dissolved, so did SJC service to Canada and to many destinations in general. SJC has many other destinations that would serve better then north of the border. SJC-YYZ, not happening, well served to SFO via *A carriers. SJC-YVR/YYC, where is the demand? There are really no economic connections there.

Quoting mikesairways (Reply 6):

Hawaii and Austin thru SJC, via a Canadian carrier? I don't follow.

AS returning Bay Area-YVR not happening. The yield was just not there. We filled the plane with 3,000 pounds of mail on top of payload and never made money. Also, if you notice AS has dropped all mainline to YVR outside LAX.

WestJet has been very happy with SFO and from what I am told gets some very nice landing fee's. I don't know where SJC's fee's are right now, but they can't be to low with that new terminal being paid for.

And AA after they acquired OC. I flew AA once YVR-SJC-LAX when AA had a hub at SJC. Don't think YVR-SJC lasted very long after the AA/OC merger.

I doubt they would start this. What exactly does SJC have to offer that SFO or OAK don't?

Well, if you're one of about 2.5 million people who live in a 20mi radius, it is definitely easier to get to than SFO or OAK. Also it is freshly renovated and there are plenty of slots available. The South Bay market can definitely support Canadian flights.

AS never served SJC-YVR. They did do SFO-YVR as noted. As much as I'd like to see it, I expect they'll add other cities from SJC before YVR.
