If memory serves me well, "Ed" is the Iron Maiden "representative" so to speak (the skeleton on their logo). Ed Force One is the aircraft they lease to do their world tour. A simple search on the internet will also give you the answer I assume.

The plane is actually in a combi configuration so they can haul all their stuff with them.

The band's singer Bruce Dickinson is an actual co-pilot for Astraeus airlines. When he isn't singing he is hauling tourist all over Europe. Pretty neat if you ask me.

Found this video of him on the 757 "Ed force one".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzwAxZ6rad8

And this where he is hosting a show about aviation and talks about his "day job"!!!!!!

Edit: Just remembered this one.

Wanna know what happens when a heavy metal singer pushes an A320 to its limits? Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKBABNL-DDM Gotta love that plane.

There is a great movie following the tour called 'Flight 666'. Airplanes and rock, can't beat it!

Maiden don't do many concerts in Europe, even the UK has had few recently although they are doing several UK dated this year.

I didn't know that. That indeed is very impressive. Nice achievement in my opinion.

Flight 666 is one of the best documentaries I have seen in recent years. It gives a great look at how the band works behind the scenes, their "soft" sides away from the stage and features great shots of the aircraft. And it's fun to see Dickenson get off the plane in his pilot's uniform and then show up in his heavy metal outfit in the next scene.
Quoting kl911 (Reply 7):

In the documentary, they explain that the idea behind using their own 757 for the tour is to enable them to go to places that otherwise would never be feasable for them. They wanted to go to places that normally never would be able to see Iron Maiden concerts live. In Europe and to some extend America, Iron Maiden concerts outside the World Tour are not uncommon, so they skipped them.

Is it the same aircraft they used for their last tour? If yes, is it the same paint job as last time or did they change it up? I know Astraeus change the plane back to their livery after the tour and if memory serves me right, it then went back into service to serve flights to Mecca.

Unlike a lot of celebrities with impressive aviation credientials, Bruce does them all one better.

Flying for the charter airline is his 'day job' and playing in the band is his after hours gig.

It is even more of an accomplishment when you realize he only got his PPL when he was in his mid-30s and pursued flying big jets as a vocation.

No it's not the same aircraft. IIRC the one used on their last tour was G-OJIB and the current one is G-STRX. And the paint job is also different.

Thanks for that information. Are they modifying it to a combi, the same way they did the last time?

Same here, but the movie really showed a fun and relaxed side of them and I actually ended up their "Somewhere back in time" album. Has some amazing songs on it.

I agree that the 666 Documentary was AMAZING! I'm not really a Maiden fan either, but behind the scenes docus like that are always interesting, and a metal band lead singer/757 pilot is something you won't see anywhere else, especially with Bruce's personality.

Quoting stevemchey (Reply 10):

Based on the other thread, it looks like the livery has been altered with a new tail scheme.

A couple of years back Astraeus Airlines converted from being a charter to an ACMI airline. So it is likely that Bruce Dickinson has flown as a pilot for bmi and easyJet:

And during their FA strike last summer Astraeus 752s operated out of LHR for BA:

IMHO, it'd be great if they came up with Eddie tail art that mirrored the "Powerslave" album cover:

hi

As i am a great "Maiden Fan" and met the drummer many years ago at a party,i was gutted to find out that Ed Force One had been circling around my works in Clacton,UK and the bay area for about an hour on a photo-shoot on Tuesday. The few guys at work who did see it,didnt really know what they were seeing, especially the jet provost buzzing around it.
Im still yet to catch a glimpse anywhere.Maybe one-day
