Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had any information on al Maktoum airport Dubai. It seems like forever ago that they started building it, but I haven't seen ANYTHING else about it. I just looked at google earth images of it, which showed a sing half finished runway. I know that these pictures are probably old, but you never know. Had building of al maktoum been halted because of the economy, or has Dubai realized that they have no real need for an airport of that size? If anybody has anything to share, I'd love to know

As far as I know only cargo carriers are operating out of DWC. Initially the whole airport and the Free Economic Zone is due to be completed by 2017, but it has been delayed by a few years due to the financial crisis.

The airport is up and running, at least for cargo ops.
Pax operations were supposed to begin next month, but now won't start until the earliest 4Q 2011. Supposedly they have several airlines committed to move over there upon opening, but I can't see too many carriers wanting to give up the interline connectivity at DXB to move to remote facility.
In any case, they are continuing to focus their expansion efforts on DXB, for now. Maktoum will "eventually" the home of EK and all other airlines, but that likely won't be the case for several decades, if ever!

Quoting lxmd11 (Thread starter): or has Dubai realized that they have no real need for an airport of that size?
I am pretty confident that they are aware that they don't NEED 90% of the things they have and/or are building in Dubai. They actually want to build aviation into part of their economy. This is going to be the aviation city the largest airport and air cargo terminal. This is supposed to be another profit generating arm of Dubai World.
