The folks up at SMF have introduced a bill to give control of ONT from LAWA to a local authority:

The title is misleading. The Sacramento airport (SMF) is not a member of the California legislature. There was a bill introduced by the local assembly rep from Ontario. It's not clear if he really has enough influence to do it. He is pretty well outnumbered by city of L.A. assembly reps. My guess is that much cash would have to be exchanged for this to happen, and I doubt that any of the parties is feeling very rich.

I was once a party to a somewhat similar affair in northern California, but it had to do with a small fire department, not a large airport. In general the rest of the state didn't care what we did, but the financial and legal problems were huge, and you wouldn't believe the complexities added in by union contracts and pensions. We finally did it in the end because the guys on the other side just had better things to do than listen to us whine.
