According to the GDS,
Air India and Indian airlines have finally merged, there is a single AI code for all flights. This marks the end of Indian Airlines. It was supposed to be done on Feb 12th but had got postponed. The way has been cleared for AI's entry into Star alliance.

I like AI very much, especially after my flight with them two years ago, but they are not a model of economic efficiency. This merger took unbelievably long. Good thing this fiasco is finally behind them.
Quoting ojas (Reply 2): It's scheduled to happen by June 2011, so hope not much of a delay.
