Sad, but will this be enough I wonder to get an okay for the merger with Aegean?

Doubt it.
EU's greatest concern was over market monopolization in the domestic arena, not that much about international flying. Dropping European flights does not change the domestic monopoly problem when Olympic and Aegean are combined.

I see this more as a move to reduce money loss. Between the Greek economy, and now rising fuel cost, Olympic must be burning cash.

Have they sold the LHR slots yet? I'm sure they will raise a lot of interest and won´t be cheap

End of an era indeed but the idea probably behind this is that if a successful appeal is approved then A3's current LHR slots will become part of the merged company ''Olympic'' anyway. Apparantly there are behind the scenes talks going on about the Domestic network also so this is just part of it. It has a fair chance then if a merger is approved they will build the routes up again.

On a better note good news for AMS BEG CAI IST LCA OTP SOF TIA

Will be interesting to see the outcome for sure.

Why ?

They have three slot pairs and only OAL259/OAL260 in at 1115 and out at 1215 are of use to those US carriers willing to pay big bucks.

The afternoon slot pair are at off peak times and there ARE still a few slots available.

And that late night pair have probably null value.

On a somewhat related note, I saw with the 2010 AEA statistics out that the Greek domestic airline market shrunk a whopping -9.4% in 2010. Pretty dire in a year much the rest of Europe saw demand stabilize if not grow.

Not really if you know about the Greek market and situation on the ground It will bounce back.

Sure it will bounce back, but essentially a 10% drop on top of the already experienced declines in 2008-2009 is rather grim and divergence compared to many peer European aviation markets which stabilized if not grew a bit in 2010.
With projections that the Greek economy will continue to shrink in 2011 (~3%), likely translates to continued erosion in airline demand. Far from rosy place.

These things go in cycles and Ive seen it all before so many countries in the world are far from rosy and their aviation markets but its not all doom and gloom ATH has seen an increase in flights from certain major carriers. The Domestic market is performing as expected considering the issues faced economically.
