Hi All,

There are numerous reports emerging that Hainan Airlines have placed a substantial order with Boeing for the following;

30 x 787-9
2 x 787-8 VVIP
6 x 777, reported to be 777Fs

On Twitter there is speculation that they may possibly be the second carrier today to order the B747-8 Intercontinental. That is in addition to a possible A380 order and possibly more frames from Airbus. Not quite sure they would order both on the same day so will wait for a report to clarify on the possible VLA order.

Does anyone have any further news on an announcement fron the carrier?

[ Edit to update on Airbus component ]

What would they need VIP 787-8s for? I know that Hainan Air is something of a holding company for a bunch of carriers but I didn't know they were in that sort of business.

(Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N) said on Tuesday that it has signed an MOU with Hainan Airlines Co Ltd (600221.SS) parent HNA Group for 38 aircraft.

Boeing said the deal included six 777s, and 32 787s.

HNA said it had signed an MOU for five planes from General Dynamics (GD.N) unit Gulfstream, and five planes from Dassault Aviation (AVMD.PA) (US$1=HK$7.78) (Reporting by Alison Leung; Editing by Chris Lewis)

The two 788s were described as VVIPs so most likely dedicated Presidential aircraft. The company must have been tasked to carry out the transaction as opposed to the PLAAF. And a practical choice too as they're not known to bring a huge press corps along...have a precedent in the "bugged" 767 sizewise. In contrast with their neighbors, they do not have to impress that they are big and have arrived. Doubtful it would be used for charters.

Hong Kong Airlines are a part of the Hainan Group which is why the initial reports were from the parent company. They also ordered 5 frames from Gulfstream and Dassault Aviation

Indeed, the 789 will be the best-looking of series and I'm betting it's the one we'll most often see as the "standard" 787 in advertising.

Well its been what, 3 years of no new orderslots? Can't sell planes if you can't make them.

WOW. What an awesome order to be. An order for 38 wide bodies is not that common.

But it's also been 3 years of delays. Could this actually mean that there wont be any more delays and that EIS will be this year?

I was actually expecting an order for 77W's, with the increased production opening up some new delivery slots. Ordering a new batch 789's now should mean delivery in 2018 or so? Unless they are converting their current order for 8+2 788's of course.

Even then their first 787's won't be delivered until 2014, so what will they do to expand their fleet in the meantime? A330's would be my guess

The first one since UA ordered 25 788's last year.

Why would they order two of each for small sub fleet? It seems if this is true, it would the start of a bigger order.

Here's the Boeing press release:

This quote from that gave me second thoughts.....

"two 787-8 VIP airplanes"

Is Hong Kong Airlines planning something similar to BA's all-premium A318 TATL service, but utilizing the 788 TRANSPAC or to Europe? Or would both VIP 788s be added to China's growing fleet of airliner-sized business aircraft to let? Could also be some tycoons decided it was time to upgrade their rides.....recall that the first canceled VIP 788 order was from Hong Kong.

Either that ... or perhaps two all "Cabin Class" airplanes, each of 34-36 cabins taking up the space of four business seats to a center aisle. Enough rich people traveling between East Asia and Europe for that yet? I think so.

No idea how true it is...just a rumour from an ex-staff member there who still knows people in the airline.
