In an economic trade package Orlando's mayor traveled to Israel and one of the meetings he has is meeting with El Al about the possibility of a direct flight.

"One of the things on the itinerary for the mayor is to meet with folks from the country's main airline -- El Al. "

El Al is not considering Orlando and the thread title is extremely misleading, if not outright wrong.

Orlando officials will meet with El Al officials as part of a typical "meet and greet."

Not only is El Al currently prohibited from adding new routes to the United States, but when it is allowed to, it will ad Miami and/or Chicago. It even said as much last week when El Al officials met with Massachusetts officials, who tried to lure El Al, as well.

Given that the US, and Israel are so close with each other politically, why can't El Al add more new routes? I would have thought there would be open skies between Israel and USA?

The FAA considers Israel a Category II country, and has for a while now. El Al cannot add new flights to the U.S. and U.S. airlines cannot codeshare with El Al.

The Open Skies Agreement was first signed last year actually. Somewhat related, but believe it or not, the first free trade agreement that the US ever signed was with Israel, about 30 years ago. Not sure why it took so long for an open skies treaty to be signed.

and has for a while now.

It's been about 2 1/2 years....I don't know, does that qualify as "a while"? Either way, this impediment should be fixed soon yes?

I wouldn't hold your breath on this one, as they said in the article about BOS-TLV service that there are only 75 daily pax. That number may be a little higher if people are using other New England airports to get there but even that wouldn't support the route. If BOS can't support it, how could MCO? I doubt MCO would have as large a market as BOS.
