The New York Times reported in its Sunday edition that Delta will be placing 737-800's on its Shuttle routes in July. The article also said that seat width would be the same as those on the 727. This is smaller than US Airways' A320's, right?

Actually, the 738 would have 189 seats for the shuttle. USAirways will have between 150 and 170. One question though, what was the title of the article. It wasn't on their site, and I haven't picked up the paper yet.

Whoa! 189 seats in the shuttle 738's! Are you sure? It happens that 189 is the max allowed by certfication. I doubt that Delta would use "Charter Pitch" and call it a business shuttle, and to fit 189 seats, that's what would have to happen.

I wouldn't be concerned about seat pitch and legromm for a 40 min flight from NY to DC. This would be a concern on the other 737's that would be put on longer flights, say for example Atlanta to Los Angeles or Seattle, on a longer flight yes the aircraft would have to be fitted with a little fewer seats to gain more legroom, but not if the flight is one hour or less. Why do you think there is no First Class on Shuttle flights? Because passenger comfort is not a concern on such a short flight.

True, there is no first class, but its not because of not catering to comfort. These are usually high paying business travellers who would normally sit in business class if it existed, and so they are taking a lesser seat by sitting in a "coach" seat. But, these passengers will not tolerate a cramped seat, even on a short flight. The pitch is usually a bit better than standard coach; the seats are leather instead of cloth; the service is the best domestic service you'll see US Domestic in "coach." All because they know that if they don't offer a great product, passengers will wait half an hour and take the other airline.
