Today KLM resumed service to Miami after a nearly 5.5 year absence. The original start date was March 27th, but due to requests from dance music fans, it was moved up one week to benefit from traffic from the Ultra music festival. The inaugural flight featured live deejay broadcasts over Dutch radio, A deejay booth and an in-flight bar for all passengers. It will be followed by a dance party at the Mondrian in South Beach.

Miami-Amsterdam was the second single largest O&D market between the United States and Europe without non-stop service, but now that KLM is on the route, and Iberia is flying Los Angeles-Madrid, all of the 75 busiest U.S.-Europe city pairs have non-stop service, as does every city pair with at least 100 PDEW. The busiest unserved route is now LAX-MIL, followed by LAX-CPH and MIA-CPH.

I would have thought that MIA-IST was larger than any of those.

Of course they did this.... flying KLM is like having a party every time I do it!
Dutch people dancing in the aisles, booze everywhere...
And I just sitting there thinking, "We ain't on Continental anymore, Ethel..."

Maybe they should remain the in-flight bar...Will be something nobody else has. However, it's probably not economical.

Wasn't this just a charter instead of the actual inauguration?

Next flight: AMS-PEK

Sort of. Though it was the Ultra attendees that got the start date pushed up by meeting the 150 passenger minimum per flight, the rest of the tickets were presumably sold to the general public. Great crew on KL 627 tonight, signed my model airplane and everything.

While a decent-sized market, MIAIST is nowhere near the size of those three and there are some other Miami-Europe markets like MIAARN, MIAMAN and MIABRU that are quite a bit larger.

Seats were sold to the public, although due to the festivities on board, KLM did block many seats.

I would love to see some pictures!

This is definitely a unique way to celebrate an inaugural flight

Great idea. I'm glad to see KLM have some fun with this instead of just having a bunch of boring execs show up at the gate for some cake.

Great way to, especially this one, celebrate a new route! From both way's there will be a lot of youngsters either partying in Miami or partying in Europe. And it just fits the Dutch way

If i weren't in the middle of my Atpl exams, i would def. have attended it, who doesn't want to have a World Record on 30.000 ft above MSL!

Surely going to make use of the flight anytime soon!

Here's one of the photos I took on the flight

I've uploaded 50 photos from the flight, and a few videos here:

I believe the deal for the flight was that some DJs asked KLM on Twitter why the inaugural flight was a week late for Spring break. The deal ended up being that if they got the plane full of DJs and dance fans, KLM would arrange a charter flight. Bloggers were also invited to be part of the publicity stunt.

See the (dutch) article here: http://www.dutchcowboys.nl/twitter/21872 (I'm sure Google Translate will do a good enough job)

Well done by KLM.

A staff member of the Dutch pilot association told me last week that KLM is looking at three new destinations in China.
One of which is Guangzhou, the other two he could not name, but they should be cities not at the coast, but more 'in-land'.
