It was because of severe weather. I recently got an email about that flight. However, another Delta flight (DL 2216 DFW-LGA M80) diverted to IAD b/c of bad weather at LGA.

This is slightly off topic, but a couple weeks ago a Delta 757 (N608DA) on a non-stop flight from DFW to ATL was forced to land due to engine trouble. I get to the airport, and there's the 757 parked there, which is odd because living in Jackson, MS, all you see is MD-80s, 727s, RJs, and turboprops. (We used to have scheduled 757s from here to BHM, ATL, and DFW... those were the days...) Anyway, this occurred on Sunday, June 17, 2001, around 2:30. The flight was 480 which was scheduled to depart at 11:30 A.M., actually departed around 1:00 P.M. This sort of thing isn't as unheard of as one might think...

(I only supplied the registration number because I figured some people would be curious to know it... I'm not trying to say that you should look at the tail number to make sure you don't get on this one, as I'm sure it's been fixed... hey, it's gone from JAN now, and it had to leave somehow!)
