A Congratulation to both RR and DY is in place. I believe PM will be happy as well

In relation to the article it mentions that the LOI is for 18 engines covering 9 planes. IIRC DY has only a contract to lease 2 from ILFC, so I would expect to see a release soon for more planes. DY has stated that they eventually would need 15 planes to make this work economically, yet they still seem to have set a more conservative growth with 9 planes initially. Probably a good thing. But when will the next 7 planes arrive?

Or when will the first two arrive?   Autumn 2012 was the schedule before the latest 787 delay, so early 2013 is IMHO more likely

Interesting, Norway just announced that they want to sell their shares of SK, will DY become the new Norwegian "flag carrier" ?

It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

Even the press release says it might be early 2013, so your reasoning seems very likely.

Or maybe DY will buy SK?

Are they leasing the planes?

Boeing's O&D report doesn't show an order for the 787 for DY, just 738s.

Yup. They have a contract to lease 2 787. So the mystery with this engine announcement is why they have a contract for 18 engines with RR, when we only know of 2 leased 787 airplanes? How many UFO do Boeing currently hold for the 787?

17, but I expect any additional frames would be coming from ILFC, who is providing the first two. And DY did note they were looking at expanding that lease by another 4-6 aircraft. Eight frames would be 16 engines, so perhaps 2 spares?

You are probably right, but I would have thought that if it was leases, then ILFC would have made the announcement on engine eselection?

A bit off topic, but...

Norwegian is already the second largest carrier in Scandinavia. Pretty good considering where they were not to many years ago

This LOI covers only nine 788 that Norwegian themselves will buy from Boeing, and doesn't cover aircraft from lessors. This means the Norwegian fleet will be minimum eleven 788. But I've also heard rumours about Norwegian being in the market for four more 788 on lease. In other words, 15 seems to be the size of the coming Norwegian X fleet.

They haven't ordered any yet from Boeing, so if they've ordered the engines, the planes can't be too far away?

This is an LoI, not an order! Although LoI usually or often end up as an order eventually

Well done RR. Perhaps rumours of their near demise are as for Mark Twain.
