It seems that OW has so few airlines compared to Skyteam and Star. I don't recall any posts about airlines to join OW just Star and Skyteam. What do they offer that the other alliances don't?

Well one of OW strongpoints is it's South American presence. LAN & possibly TAM in the future offers great connections across the continent while AA & IB have a very strong presence on flights to North America & Europe respectively.

OneWorld is specifically trying to stay smaller than the other alliances: they've been somewhat picky about who can go in and who can't. They still offer a very comprehensive service, and they've gotten a lot of awards.

Besides South America, they're quite strong in major financial centers: they are the largest by market share in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Madrid (Europe's 3rd largest city by population and GDP) and London, have strong footholds in NYC, LAX and Chicago, and soon also in India's major centers. As a result, OW can punch above their size.

This is often repeated both on Anet and on other forums as if it were an established fact .

I am skeptical , if OW are actually so picky how did they end up with IB who are notorious for poor customer service and two financial basket cases in the form of MX and JL . I have challenged people both on this forum and other forums to provide some evidence that OW has stricter criteria than the 2 major alliances but no one ever gives any specifics , they just repeat the mantra that OW is "more selective"or "has stricter criteria" or "is more quality driven" as if that is all the proof that is needed . Perhaps you would care to explain in exactly what way OW is more "picky" than the *A or Skyteam.

That is correct. Also when Air Berlin joins oneworld next year, Austria's NIKI will become a oneworld affiliate member. Qantas Airways subsidiary Jetstar also plans on joining oneworld.

Star is still a lot bigger than Sky Team.

LX and SN were close to join One World but ended up going to Star because LH influenced them to do so. What is going on with Star is this: LH wants to build its own powerful empire in Europe by wrapping all the members they can. If this didn't happen, LX and SN would probably be in One World by now.

LX had signed up to join OW and changed their minds because BA pissed them off so much, the influence of LH came after BA had already driven LX away from OW.

Not unless something has drastically changed in the last few days. Jetstar are not joining OW , instead QF flight numbers operated by JQ are now eligible for OW fares , quite a different thing .
