Akulivik, QC = AKV Iata Code?

Today a friend of mine and myself stumbled across an old First Air timetable that included service to Akulivik, QC.

The first thing he noticed was that the IATA code for Akulivik, QC was AKV and he asked: "It's a Canadian airport. Why doesn't it start with the letter Y?"

So....to that, I ask my fellow airliners.net experts: Why does the 3-letter IATA code for the Canadian airport Akulivik, QC start with an "A" and not a "Y"?

I did a search of Canadian IATA codes and everything....from non-Customs facilities to unpaved runways....they all still had a "Y" IATA code. So, Nothing unusual stuck out about Akulivik.

I was under the impression that ALL Canadian airports had an IATA code starting with Y? So is there a reason that Akulivik has an uncommon IATA code (non-"Y" prefix) for a Canadian airport?

I have no idea why the AKV code was chosen, but the airport's ICAO code is CYKO, so it should be YKO under the usual Canadian pattern.

Public service announcement: "It's" = "it is". To indicate posession, write "its." Looks wrong, but it's correct grammar

May be that code is not available or it is a secondary airport

Akulivik is a small airport in the Western Arctic region close to Inuvik. The gravel run way is 300'X75'.

Regarding the airport code in Canada I dont'know the exact answer but I know that «non Y» airports rarely have scheduled flights and have been developed more recently than «Y airports»

There are quite a few examples of that. The IATA code for Vancouver Harbour Water Airport in downtown Vancouver that has extensive scheduled floatplane service is CXH but the ICAO code is CYHC.
