Windy At DTW 4-17-11/ 27's In Use?

Westerly winds gusting to the mid 40'smph are reported at Romulus, Michigan(DTW).
Is ATC using the 27's today?

Yes...they are. We landed 27L. They were landing and departing both 27s.

Interesting...seemed like they were doing work on one of them (it would've been 9L/27R, they were doing construction at least close to it) when I connected there last summer, I noticed that when I was taxiing from the A concourse (McNamara) to 21R.
From what I'm seeing it looks like DTW is experiencing delays of around 45 minutes, obviously having just the 2 parallel crosswind runways in use currently causes some constraints. But it seemed like the place had more than enough capacity (despite DL's ops being heavily banked) with the 4 parallel 21's/22's.

9L/27R was completely rebuilt and reduced in width from 200 ft. to 150 ft. The runway is closed most of the time, and only gets opened on days like today. Most widebody aircraft will still use the 22s even in crosswind situations though as the 27s are a bit shorter.

I don't know the specifics, but I thought I saw it was like 280 22G31. It was a direct crosswind...was an interesting approach to DTW..that's for sure.

Correct. 9L/27R was rebuilt last summer with money from the Obama Stimulus project/program. Work was completed last year, but the runway is normally NOTAMed closed since it is used as a taxiway and it intersects 3 of the 4 parallel runways.

Funny thing is I only seen the 9s used once in my whole life. I saw regional jets departing on 9R a couple years back in the summer when they had I think 3R/21L closed for construction.

Why did they reduce the width? Just felt it wasn't necessary to keep it as wide when they put new pavement in?

9R is used for departures when 3R/21L is closed. As you said, it was used for an entire summer once, but it gets used on occasion now whenever its closed for maintenance (or snow removal).
