Last week in Rome, I was talking to two Tarom pilots about their A310 in the fleet and noted that it is an odity that they still fly it (Tarom used to have 3 A310's, 1 crashed at Balotesti, 1 is now the Romanian presidential aircraft, and one in service). The last A310 (YR-LCA) was the one evacuating Romanians from Japan.
The pilots mentioned that Tarom is again interested in resuming some long hauls and are actively seeking two second 767's. Now I know that this subject came up before, but how hard can it be to find a 767. Aren't there plenty of them stored all over the globe? Besides, what routes could they really be profitable on from Bucharest? Granted, Tarom is now part of SkyTeam, but I don't see much SkyTeam traffic connecting through OTP, even now that the airport has a new terminal (I think it openned in March). On another note, I think Tarom is still a government owned airline (please correct me if I am wrong on this), wouldn't they need to as for a bid for new aircraft? If so, I did not see any RFP's going out fom Tarom.
Any more on this, or is it just another rumor.
