Just wondering how AS's presence at YVR has been significantly downgraded over the years....I wonder whether it was the WestJet factor since launching PHX, LAS, SFO - but I would have thought that there must a significant frequent fliers for AS in the Vancouver area that would have continued flying AS.

They still serve core markets. From what I've heard (now I've heard it both ways...), SFO was never really a top seller and there just wasn't enough room for everyone in the market.

Also, QX still serves from PDX and SEA. Also, AS has expanded their operation at BLI which I imagine has hurt them in YVR (and YYJ to a lesser extent)

I can't imagine that one BLI flight each to HNL and LAS has hurt AS at YVR that much.

I remember when AS started serving YVR they stated that they intended to build it up as a focus city of about the size of their PDX operations. Obviously that's no longer the case.

AS has dropped SFO-YVR and the one mainline late night SEA-YVR flight (probably was a repositioning flight).

AS tried YVR-ANC one Summer and didn't bring it back.

AS also did PSP-YVR; PHX-YVR; and LAS-YVR for a short time IIRC.

Interesting, they also did SAN-YVR for a short time. I believe their original YVR authority was for SAN. That was soon changed to LAX.

And we know about the stillborn SNA-YVR flight that never got off the ground due to customs issues at SNA.

AS has indeed connected SAN and YVR, the most recent service ended in 2006. I'm trying to find my records but if I remember correctly, this was either the second or third attempt to establish themselves in the market. (AC now seems to own the market, and has served it consistently since 2005.)

I would be pleased -- but surprised -- if AS were to try it again...

interesting that WestJet will be launching flights to SNA from YYC and YVR now.

I believe SNA has since added the necessary customs facilities to support international service. That was in another recent thread. As I understand it, I know YYC and YVR are pre-clearance airports but there still needs to be customs available on the US side should the need arise to recheck someone on arrival.

I was really hoping that AS would add SJC-YVR as part of their SJC build-up. However, realistically it probably won't happen since they couldn't make SFO-YVR work.

There has been SJC-YVR service in the past. Quick history: AA did it for awhile. When they offloaded most of their West Coast SJC routes to QQ (before late buying QQ and gutting their routes), they kept SJC-YVR. So, they no longer did SJC-SNA; SJC-PDX or SJC-SEA for example (because QQ now did them), but still did SJC-YVR up to four times a day. I assume this was do to route authorization issues.

This Canadian Airlines (not AC) regional subsidiary did it for a short time with F28s also. And AC did SJC-YYZ for awhile, and SJC-YYC and SJC-YOW for a very short time (the latter presumably a "nerd bird" kind of flight for high tech traffic).

Now there are currently no Canadian no-stops at all from SJC.

Air Cal launched the SJC - YVR service. I believe that was the first ever international service for SJC. There's a few pictures of the first flight at the Diiridion Station in San Jose.

I remember when Air Cal inaugurated SJC-YVR service. It was pretty unprecedented back then. All of the YVR service was out of SFO, including Canadian/CP Air, Cathay Pacific, Western and United.

AA only had the SJC-YVR service as a hold-over from the OC days.

CP Air had some great onboard service. One of my last trips on a standard DC8 was on CP SFO-YVR in 1981.

Yeah...I passed up my opportunity to fly CP Air back in 1986 to fly on CX for Expo 86.

Yes, and as I mentioned AA maintained as many as four SJC-YVR non-stops a day for awhile, even after most of their other West Coast routes like SJC-SEA had been offloaded to the new QQ.
