Heads Up FAT Spotters - CRJ 700 In AS Paint

Flying out of FAT an hour ago, I noted a freshly painted QX CRJ 700 in the new AS paint at the Skywest hanger. The aircraft looks as if it's a downsized MD80. Skywest seemed in a smaller font than the Horizon font on the newly painted Q's. Maybe someone can upload a photo?

I've been seeing it there in the mornings when out flying but too early to get a shot of it. Looks pretty cool!

Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.

I saw it Sunday evening when the flight I was on landed. But I didn't have time to drive to the far side of the airport to take a picture. Did look good.

Yeah, I'd agree.

Paducah, KY used to be PUK.....we had fun with that.....then they changed to PAH.

That one or another one is sitting at the United Cargo ramp as of 9pm up here @ PDX. I like the way it looks.

Thanks for posting. Ok, I don't like it.

I can understand why Horizon remains in the new paint scheme, if only for the transition period through 4/2012. But, to give Skywest equal billing, I don't get it. There's no history between Alaska and Skywest as there is between Alaska and Horizon. Why make the Skywest name so prominent? I will admit, I've always loved Horizon, and I've always believed they're the best regional by far. Skywest has big shoes to fill if they're to match the service quality....and I'm not just referencing the micro-brews.

AS needs a better option than five CRJ 700s under the Skywest banner.

I don't really care about the branding (I figured this would happen with the Horizon switch), but I do like the Eskimo on the CRJ-700.

It's like seeing the unique, high-quality mom-and-pop shop getting slowly replaced by a generic national chain. I'm interested in seeing how QX and OO employees are going to get along, considering they've been rivals for years.

I don't fault the Air Group, but I should probably just keep the rest of my thoughts to myself.

Cheers,
Anthony/Airport

I'm going to miss the QX birds/brand dearly, but I can't imagine an airplane looking bad in the AS livery. I'm probably welcoming this more than I should based on the exclusively 737 fleet that AS has fielded in the last couple years...at this point, I have a hard time feeling bad about it. Good looking bird, hope the arrangement works out for both parties.

Outsourcing regional ops to a carrier that isn't Horizon is a huge step for AAG even if the scope of the non-Horizon flying is pretty limited. Let's hope it goes smoothly--I can't imagine why anyone would want to root against a carrier like AS in our current era.

I'm not at all rooting against them. Quite the opposite. I'm just saying it's tough to see QX getting so much of what made the carrier stand out taken away while it's being stripped down to just another regional. I'm in no way upset at AS for it, more upset with the direction of the industry and the race to the bottom of the regionals which has led to the high quality service QX offered being uncompetitive.

I think there's more overall brand equality to have the SkyWest logo there than not at all, it's equivalent to the older Delta Connection liveries that gave much more prominent branding to the individual operators (which started to diminish as new carriers came in outside of the original four).

Last I knew, nothing was changing with QX's onboard product, only the paintjob on the airplane.

I think it's also a consideration that AS doesn't have a brand for its regional operations. There is no "Alaska Express" or "Alaska Connection," so if these birds didn't feature the SkyWest name in the same way that Horizon is highlighted, they would just read "Alaska" on the fuselage - which may not be desirable for a contracted operation. This is probably just their choice for differentiation between mainline and contracted regional aircraft.

Does anyone know if they made any interior enhancements to the CRJs? Horizon had them absolutely destroyed inside...

Indeed ... which I do consider the AlaskaHorizon and AlaskaSkyWest branding somewhat awkward.

I think the true reason this came about was because they wanted to contract out some CRJ flying, but they couldn't exactly brand "Horizon Air operated by SkyWest" ... and it could also be confusing to have Horizon aircraft flying in their own colors, and the SkyWest operation flying in Alaska colors.
