AF was meant to start operating the 77W on its CDG-MIA route from October 30th, 2011.
Today, I was on AF website and finally, they switched back to 744.
Does someone know what happens?

WHY does Miami keep getting the runts of the AF fleet, I was looking forward to the 777-300ER as no airline current schedules a 77W to MIA. Maybe Montreal can take the 744 and send 77W to MIA.

Isn't it based on Premium demand? My understanding is that the AF 744s go to more "leisure" destinations, and the 77Ws go to places with higher premium demand.

I guess there is divergence in viewpoint b/w AF and LH here, as the latter will start A380 service to MIA in June. There was some rumor that AF would also send the A380 down here; perhaps not.

You are right, 744 are graceful. Especially the Cathay Pacific versions.

AF has 3 different 77W configurations, The typical 8 F, 67J one. The one used to the Fench Caribean and Scheyelles. and the third( Miami's) is a newer one with no F 35 J +/- with Y+ and Y.

Quoting FSDan (Reply 6): Was AF going to use one of the new high-density 77Ws like they are on the MCO route? Or was it going to be one of the birds with F class?
In fact none. They introduced a 3rd config for the 77W with 3-class layout and featuring the new business class cabin. 381 seats (42J 24Y+ 315Y). These frames are not being deployed by AF on CDG-GIG route (one of the 2 daily flights)
New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

I fully agree. I love to watch any aircraft doing it's thing but at least with the 747 & 380 you see something that at least looks different. Same reason I enjoy the MD's that SAS send to Kastrup. Just nice to see something out of the ordinary.
On a side note, there was a 777 parked right up against the fence at CPH today and it's closest I've ever been to one. Just couldn't get my head around how much smaller it looked than I expected up close. Odd.

Thanks for the clarification.
So maybe AF just needed more capacity that the 744 provides?

AF needs more Y seats on these leisure routes such as MIA, so i can see why they would choose to stick with the 744, although i would love to of seen a 77W finally at MIA!

Well, i'll take a 747 'runt' any day over any other Aircraft in service.
I don't need PTV'S Video games, internet etc either. Just a good book, a glass of wine and the enjoyment of the finest ride on the most magnificent Aircraft ever made.
The best contribution to safety is a competent Pilot.

Does anyone know how the KL and AF flights to MIA are complimenting each other? I know that AF is timed to feed Southern/Eastern Europe connections whilst the KL flight is timed to cater to Northern Europe/UK connections. Does the addition of the KL flight have anything to do with AF canceling its 77W plans for MIA?

10-abreast on the 744 is much more civilized than a cramped 10-abreast 777. Maybe AF didn't want to be the only carrier serving MIA with 10-abreast 777s (or am I missing someone else?)

Yep, keep the 744 at MIA please! We're inundated with wing mounted twinjets. Anyone wanting to see a 77W at MIA will just have to wait for AA to bring them!

I was not so thrilled to trade the usual 744 against a nightmare-ish 10 abreast 77W.
Now the queen of the sky stays, I wonder if AF is not re-analyzing the situation by comparing with what will be on the market.
Let's be serious: LH will offer an A380 and you come with a 10 abreast 77W?
I know for sure that as a usual AF690 client to MIA, I am more than ready to try LH to spare me the horror AF 77W which I tried once and which vaccinated me already

I uess all you Miami people would have to drive to MCO to see a AF 77W... I wouldn't call the B744 the "runts of the fleet". They are still pretty nice!

We'll trade you at MCO. I will be glad to see an AF 747-400 there since we lost our LH 744 to an A340-600 and are losing two of our VIR ones to A330s. You can have our 3x a week 77W for your daily 744.
