I am planning a trip to Tampa FL. at the end of July, and I want everyone's opinion. Which would you rather do.
1. Fly AirTran CAK-ATL-TPA-ATL-CAK for $476 round-trip for two. Flights are DC-9's. Service will be nice since I've flown them before.
2. Fly Delta CLE-CVG-TPA-ATL-CLE for $485 round-trip for two. The flights to and from TPA are going to be 767's. If I choose this flight, it will be my first on a widebody, and first time seeing one in person.
So, it's down to flying on a cheaper airline with good service, or fly on a slighly more expensive airline just to fly in a widebody. Hmmmm....descisions, descisions. Help me out, guys!

My vote would be to go Delta. A $9 difference is really no difference at all. Plus there is really not much at all to see at CAK in terms of non-commuter airliners and even those are few and far in between.
It's more interesting to fly on a plane that you've never been on before. Plus, you'll get to see some Continental planes at CLE.

I would put my vote for AirTran. I don't know how you got $476 on them. Did you try http://www.airtran.com? On there I found fares from CAK-TPA via ATL for AS HIGH AS $339.00 r/t. There are also fares for as low as $249 r/t including taxes. This is with two week advance purchase, for flights peak, off-peak, one day, multiple days.
The one week advance purchase has fares as high as $438.

1. Don't you know why you got that fare on Delta??????????? Doesn't everyone know why the majors have low fares???????????? Thank Airtran, Frontier, Vanguard, Jet Blue, Spirit, Midway, Midwest Express, etc.
There is a war going on. Those airlines and their employees are fighting for you with comparatively low wages. As Lowfareair pointed out you can save over $200 for just two weeks notice. Come-on you can use $200 can't you. Save the 777 for later, it isn't going anywhere.

Fly Delta. There will be better service and the DC-9s are very loud. Enjoy anyway!

I gather he´s talking about the ticket price for TWO persons.
Anyway, I´ve flown DL before, and they were OK. I don´t know AirTran, but I doubt their service is on a par with DL´s. Plus the 767s are much nicer and more comfortable than the 9s.

Dude, go with Delta. What series is the 767 anyways? I just paid $199 to get on the last L1011 flight, spend 3 hours in ATL, then come back on my first 777 ride. Yeah, I'm crazy!

I'd go with Delta. AirTran cancels so often here it is the running joke. No one commutes on them because they are far to unreliable, and even if they don't cancel they are always 2-3 hours late. If it is that close in price, go with Delta, my opinion.

Id vote for AirTran,
I live in Philly and id say 99% of AirTran's flights go out on time. Even in Atlanta they dont cancel alot of flights. AirTran has made leaps and bounds in the last year and definately deserves your business. If the prices are comparitively the same, fly the little guy. The little guy appreciates it much more than delta would, where you would be just another name on a passenger list.

Thanks for correcting me on the airfare for two. The point is still that the overall airfare is low because of lowfare airlines.
If Delta has their way the next time Kcle flys, he might get a 767 aircraft, but for sure he'd get a 767 sized fare for that seat.
Just something to think about. Either way Kcle - enjoy your trip.

I fly AirTran all the time, and I've never been on a flight that didn't get me where I was going on-time. Usually, I get there a few mins early. The 717s are nice, but if you are going to be flying on the DC-9s, I would pick the DL767. (but only because of the noise)

Take AirTran
BonanzaFunjet hit it right on the head...if you don't patronize low fare airlines....and they leave the city or route you fly....you are not going to see low fare service again.
The only thing I take exception with are his categorizations of Midwest Express and Midway as low fare airlines. Unh-uh no way Jose.
And he omitted (intentionally or otherwise) my favorite low fare airline.
And although I don't know his dates of travel....I don't know why he doesn't take WN out of CLE for $442 RT for the party of two. Only downside is a change at Midway, but oh well. I'd rather do Midway than Hotlanta any day of the week.

fly airtran, save money now, then again later!!! DAL's motives are clear, they will dump low fares on unsuspecting consumers, flood the market with asms, kill off all competition then control the market! don't play into their hands, support the affordable, and low cost carriers they are the only thing keeping the majors from being able to have their way with you!! and you cant just hope someone else will protect you, and just be glad you're not trying to fly someplace that a quality low fare service isn't available(like your airport a few years ago)Take my word for it, if DAL drives AIRTRAN out of your city, you will feel prettty USED!!!!!!!!

Pay for your Airtran tickets with amex, 3 round trips = 1 free ticket anywhere airtran flys!!!!! All the Dal people are crying Skymilesssss, well they'll give you a free ticket after you've flown around the world, Plus on airtran you can upgrade your tickets for $25./leg, and really enjoy the leather seats, & free cocktails

Delta's 767's, even the new -400's only have leather
seats in First Class. Save the 767 flights for the
transcon or overseas flights. If you fly AirTran you
can upgrade for $25.00 per segement get a better
seat and a couple of free beers or cocktails. On those
DL 767 flights ATL-TPA you are not going to get a meal
or anything special just a very limited beverage
selection what DL calls "Fast Break Beverage Service"
and a couple of biscoffs.

Why would some one choose to fly DAL? THE only reason that their price is what it is, is because AirTran is there to save CAK? Without AirTran I'm sure you'd have to drive to CLE to avoid about a $1000.00 fare for your flight. The only kind of people that CHOOSE to fly Delta over a low fare airline are the people that don't care about their own money!

Jetspotter: about half of the '9s have leather in business from what I understand. And what service on DL? Drinks and peanuts on two, maybe three legs if they decide to serve him on the TPA-ATL flight. Drinks and Biscoff's on all four of the FL flights.

good luck
