JetBlue flight 822 from SDQ to JFK is diverting to Bermuda right now. Anybody know why? Not that's it's an uncommon occurrence, but I'm always curious as to why- medical, technical, unruly passenger.

It is due to a medical emergency on board, but certainly an unusual diversion destination.

There is definitely a portion of the route where BDA is a viable alternate. Further south, the Bahamas are close, and further north DC or Virginia is probably closest.

It's easy to think of the Caribbean as being south of Florida, but a lot of it is much further east, so flights to the Northeast will pass fairly close to Bermuda, at least closer there than to the US.

Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

That's very true. If you look at the flight patterns from the northeast U.S. and eastern Canada to the Caribbean on flightaware, many come close to Bermuda.
