It's taking a trip for the primary (perhaps sole) purpose of accumulating miles and/or segments in a FF program. Most people do them to earn the perks that go with elite status. The goal is to maximize the miles/segments and minimize the airfare. Generally, arranging a run with a per mile cost below $0.02US is decent.

I haven't done one recently, but plan to do one in the fall when the fares come down. I'm shooting for UA Premier Exec (50k miles/year). My employer has cut back on travel, so it looks like a mileage run will be necessary this year.

My last one was on July 4 and involved ATL-MEM-MKE-DTW-PIT-DTW-BHM-MEM-ATL in a 17 hour timeframe.

It's simple. For AA or any other airline Take the amount of the fare and divide by the number of (round-trip) miles. If the fare is below .02 cents miles, then you're in the ballpark.

The definition of a 'mileage run' is pretty far reaching - I would say any air trips that are meant to maximize miles and/or segments for the sole purpose of gaining FF miles and/or STATUS is considered a mileage run.

Sometimes it's a simple as scheduling a flight with a connection instead of a direct flight (i.e. flight on CO from EWR-DEN is 3200 miles direct, if I connect through IAH I tack on an extra 1000 miles), taking an extra trip at the end of the year so you have the miles or segments to get elite status, or you can be certifiably insane like B747-437B's example  Big grin

Hey Sean, were you able to give away all of your first class upgrades? How were the reactions?

I am starting to get into mileage runs myself. My goal is to take advantage of mileage offers from the different airlines (mostly Northwest and United, but I am starting on American) because I am planning on taking a long flight to MNL before the year is up or early next year. I then will use all of the miles I accumulate to upgrade on whichever airline I choose for that trip. Business Class for a trans-Pacific flight sure does sound good!

If anybody wants to do a mileage run on United either from or through ORD sometime next month let me know. I did a Northwest run ORD-DTW-MSP-DTW-ORD that took up half the day and I was dying to talk to someone on the plane!!! All of those flights were nearly empty.

I would personally include the taxes, but also factor in any bonus miles you get for current elite status, online booking bonus miles, etc. I would suggest that every single mile you earn goes into the numerator, and every penny you expend on the ticket goes into the denominator. Also keep in mind that certain fares require an overnight stay, so unless you sleep on a bench you'll be spending for a room too.

I generally shoot for extremely long distance runs (e.g. JFK-SIN, approx 21,000 base miles) as opposed to segment runs like B747-437B mentioned.

I found SNA-DTW via LAS one way and PHX the other for $98 with tax using Travelocity. It arrives in DTW at 7:15 AM and departs at 11:15 AM same day. That's over 5000 mile for $98 or $0.0196 cents per mile. Would this work? Then I could credit it to my TWA account and the miles eventually become AAdvantage miles.

I don't have the spare cash to do mileage runs as such but when I do have to go somewhere I make sure I get as many miles as possible.

For example, I need to fly Adelaide-Canberra about 4-6 times a year, which is approx 950km. But under the fare rules I can make that flight ADL-MEL-SYD-CBR, which is 650 + 850 + 250 km = 1750km approx, almost doubling the mileage (these distances are only guesses).

Same when travelling Australia to Europe: you have to stop in Asia so why not change flight number, because if you don't, the mileage calculated is the direct point-to-point distance, not taking into the account the diversion to fit in the stopover, often adding up to a couple of 000km.

So, I don't spend anything on mileage runs, but by being careful add an estimated 20-40% on annual mileage which can mean an extra redeemable flight (nowhere near enough for elite status though...)

Question: does the gate agent ever look at you strange or ask questions like "why the heck are you taking this ridiculous 4 segment route to travel back to the original airport on the same day?" or are mileage runs something that is common and well known within the industry? Just curious.
Last year I grabbed one of those $60 fares on Southwest and flew to another airport just to take some pics and came back later in the day.

This is just my opinion, but I think the people who do MRs are kind of a FF cult, so I don't think it's that widespread.

I understand that the airline's have no problem with mileage runs (they're filling seats after all). Plus, you're probably not bringing a bunch of luggage, and you're showing you're a loyal customer, etc. In fact, on FlyerTalk they've asked these questions and airline reps have said "no problemo".

Most of the NWA staff at ATL know my habits by now, but they were pretty shocked at first!  Smile Nowadays, they are just stunned to see me serve up stuff like 8 segments for $99 plus tax.

I feel kind of stupid when they see me boarding aircraft 10 minutes after I left hehehe
When they asking me why I'm doing it, my answer is always "for FF miles". Once they joked that I should start safety demonstration.
When I accumulate enough miles to fly for free I'm using them. I've got two free tickets from USAirways and one from Delta. Also I have 28000 miles with Continental but I will keep them for little bit longer.
Last saturday I used my Delta SkyMiles to fly DCA-CVG-DCA. I left DCA 10am and 12:50pm I was on my way back to DCA.

Malaysia used to be great - you could do PEN/LGK (10 mins airborne) in Business Class for only US $20. Do it 20 times and you could reach top status in Star in about 5 days.
