Today Spirit Airlines filed with the DOT for authority to operate between Detroit and Cancun Mexico.

Spirit previously held this authority which lapsed due to failure to operate.

Spirit states its intention to reinstate the route effective the upcoming winter season.

Interesting. I wouldn't see why the DOT wouldn't approve it. It will be nice to see how it would compete with DL and indirectly with LAN.

LAN will also resume CUN service this winter on SY

They've flown this route before. Not hard to fill a plane between DTW - MCO, TPA, FLL, RSW, or CUN in the winter.

Route authorities in general are issued for either 1 or 2 years, with a dormancy period of 90-days unless if it was approved as seasonal to start with.

Could there be a 90-day+ dormancy planned ? (eg end of Summer till January 12 ?)

Three carriers can operate the route and if NK will lapse, that will only leave DL.

Interesting that NK somehow lost the authority to serve a route that it has flown for years now. This isn't some highly coveted frequency being warehoused. Are there other U.S.-Mexico route authorities that have or may soon lapse(d)?

I can see this route being very successful. DL was operating two or three daily non-stops at peak travel times during Winter last year. I can also see many loyal NK Detroiter's loving this route! They have a little niche here... not quite sure why they've abandoned DTW so much. Then again, this is a step in the right direction!

Sorry to jumping in - I'd rather not start a specific thread about it for now - but which Mexican and Caribbean sun/tourism-based destinations are the most popular with Americans? CUN is surely the number-one in Mexico.

Does anyone have any figures/sources?

Cheers.

CUN is clearly #1
MBJ is up there.
NAS is fairly high as is SJD.
I assume you aren't counting Puerto Rico?
PVR is pretty big.

Also PUJ/SDQ, but it is hard to tell how much of SDQ is beach traffic.

Go to T100 Intl on the BTS.gov site.

I wonder if ORD-CUN is far behind?

San Jose Cabo, MX (SJD) is very popular, particularly in the western U.S. This may be second to CUN

Punta Cana, DO (PUJ) is also very popular both with western and European tourists.
