I been to SJU last week and was shocked how AA downsized SJU. I've been there a couple of years ago and AA was everywhere! I only saw 1 B-737-800 and several ATR's during my 3 hours trip to SJU in the afternoon! In the meanwhile I saw about 6 US (A-330,B-757-A321) and several DL, Air Tran , UA's and B6's !
When did AA downsizue SJU ?
Is SJU still an AA Hub?
When was AA at its Peak in SJU?
Which Routes got axed?

AA San Juan operations have been reduced in recent years. More Caribean flying has been done from Miami and LCC airlines, primarily JetBlue, have increased their flights to SJU. The plane AA used to San Juan, A300, have been retired from the AA fleet so 757, 767 and 737 have had to fill in, none have the cargo capability of the A300.

The AA SJU hub was fully eliminated April 5th of this year with the final flights from BOS, IAD, TPA, SDQ and PHL (which I was on both ways) and Eagle stopped flying to five destinations (AXA, SXM, I forget the other 3).
Up until only a few years ago AA was flying jets to BWI, EWR, TPA, MCO, and FLL.
Before that many of the mainland jets would continue on to caribbean islands like SXM, STT etc.,
Now AA+MQ is still the largest carrier at SJU but B6 is bigger than AA mainline. However, AA doesnt run SJU like some of the other US airlines in that their flights still somewhat resemble a bank. AA has 4 flights out before 9am (2x MIA, JFK and DFW). MQ still has a reasonable number of flights arriving late afternoon to connect to later flights to ORD, JFK, MIA and BDL.
Still served out of SJU on AA: MIA (7x daily (3x 757, 4x 738)/8x in the winter), JFK (3x daily (2x 757/1x 738)/4x in winter), ORD (1x daily 738/2x daily in winter), DFW (2x daily 757, sometimes it goes 3x in winter, i think SAT), BDL (1x 738), CCS (1x 738), LAX (2x weekly 757, soon to be 1x weekly).

Is the LAX-SJU route performing badly or is it just a seasonal cut?

Quoting bpat777 (Reply 5): IAD is coming back in Nov also on a 738.
It is? That hasn't showed up in an enilria thread yet.
Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

I thought it was 4 weekly as recently as 2008. I guess there is no reason why those pax can't connect in DFW or MIA
