T'is The Season For Holidays-Caribbean Aviation 88

Once again, a warm greeting to all patrons!

Welcome to the 88th instalment of the Caribbean Aviation Thread. As we approach what is hoped to be another bountiful summer holiday season for airlines, the Air Transport Association has predicted that profits for the aviation industry will plunge by 78% this year as compared to 2010. As we are all fully aware, the Caribbean is not exempt from these global industry challenges and we have already seen sporadic signs of its impact over the past year so far. Let's hope that all airlines, both indigenous and foreign serving the Caribbean and the collective Caribbean tourism industry experience a bumper summer. T'is the season for holiday makers!

BW424 thanks for starting another thread. To all of you enjoying a Caribbean Summer please do not brag hahahahaa.

Is there any end in sight for the BW Board drama, will the management be allowed to at least move forward with integrating the JM and BW reservation systems, call centers. I am also anxious to see what BW will do with the JM website.

It's hard to believe that the current terminal at POS has been in use for 10 years now!

As for BW, the burning questions you raised I would also like to be answered. Unfortunately, I have lost all hope in this board being thrown out and I'm just waiting to see what happens. The Board issue has been going on for to long and it looks like PM Kamla and Nicholas are just trying to ride out the bad, but factual media coverage on the issue...which it seems for now, they've succeeded at.

With respect to the integration, JM's youtube page has posted a new vid. It's a 3min vid, but near the end, they mention a "combined frequent flier program" is "coming soon". Check it out here,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdEzSRkoD4c

Also of note, CAL's fb page is up to 19,438 fans while JM's is up to 27,433. Both are steadily increasing each week. If anything, the marketing department has really come out full force and I don't blame them!

The GORTT is going on their 2nd retreat since in office in TAB to discuss "better governance for the people". Tomorow will still be their weekly Cabinet meeting. Let's see if anything will be done then.

Isn't time for Digicel to put its antenas near Trini and Jamaican interfering government offices in maintenance?

As it has been said before, both Jamaica and Trinidad are protecting the BW-JM deal with all the (red-tape) interference stoping RedJet to operate in POS and KIN.
Had BW-JM not been goverment owned, probably there'd have been much less fuss about RedJet competition.

Great new thread!

I've been closely following Red Jet's ever continuing saga. I hope after all these bumps that they can get on the way. IMHO it looks like someone is afraid of some good competition. Granted, RedJet is offering a completely different product to other airlines, it all boils down to $$$$$$.

On another note, Is LI seriously considering upgrading to jets? This will certainly be an interesting thread when and IF they every decide to upgrade to RJ's. As long as I've been in this business, there's been talk about LI getting a jet fleet. I'll wait in anticipation!

Have a good one everyone!!!

Not likely to return to Europe. Too much capacity already on the LOndon run. They will also have the same problem as before. The need to have 2 planes to service a route which doesnt fully utilize these planes. Maybe out of KIN with VS going but then is that enough to justify acquisition of expensive long range aircraft?

Nice addition. But what happened/will happen with CAL and the proposed start of B6 on the same route. That could potentially see CO/DL/B6/AA/BW all fighting for the NYC - ANU market.

Yup but that would be an overkill...i think B6 will reconsider for the time being...Unfortunately, it would likely be BW that may get knocked out. CO will be just fine and is well established in the market. DL adjust their schedule keenly to damand throughout the year between 1-4 flights per week and as a result normally have very good LF's year round. AA is well established in the ANU market so will by default do well. I really hope BW will be able to stick around....I think they have an excellent overall product

It seems that DL is the first casulty in all of this as they are only doing the route seasonally, so it will be only BW and CO out of NYC on this route for the fall with DL doing JFK-ANU-JFK 1w for the winter. Given DL's history in the Caribbean and that their fares are the lowest of the current three it stands to reason that they may eventually drop the route. AA's 4 weekly will not be sustained for long, and I eventually see them bringing the schedule to a realistic level.

DL has been seasonal for the past few years suspending flights for the very slow sep-nov period... DL is currrently 3X weekly for this summer..1X weekly Dec/Jan but goes back to 3X weekly Feb-Apri 2012....As i mentioned, when they do fly, they fill their planes. My sources at DL here said the subsidy on the route was discontinued after the first year as the route had exceeded expectations..., therefore DL has been flying into ANU since 2009 without subsidy but we will see what happens given DL's history in the region. AA 4X weekly from JFK on a 738 should be fine considering the majority of tourist traffic is from the NE USA ...If CO can do 10X weekly 738/739 during the winter, AA should be able to do 4X weekly in the peak and perhaps 2X off peak....AA is the most established US carrier in ANU with year round daily flights from SJU and MIA and despite their bad service, have excellent connectivity to many cities across the USA/Canada and beyond....BW basically only gets some of the VFR
