Hello all, I thought I share my video of UA990 Landing ACC (Accra, Ghana) back in February of this year. I recorded this in 1080p and it was just right before we were line up to rwy 23 until we park at the gate. (well no gate there for all the heavy's that was already there. I hope you all like it.

I wonder why the announcements are done in french as well. Neither Ghana nor Nigeria are french speaking countries.

Thank you! This airport is where I caught the plane-spotting bug. The terminal was pretty much just a moderately large shed, with a car-park and a picket fence. My pals and I used to hang around the place, especially the hangars. The most amazing part is that NONE of those houses, roads or anything you flew over existed. Just empty bush, as far as the eye could see, except for the place where I lived (the University) which was way out all on its own about two miles west (your side of the plane) about one minute before you touched down. (Still there, of course; I think I could just pick it out.) And, somewhere around five miles north of where you started the video was where a B-377 Stratocruiser once shed a propeller, so far out in the wilds that it took them over a day to find it. Nowadays, it would have chewed through someone's roof!

Thank you again for posting this, and apologies for my nostalgia-fest...

Must be a high enough number of French speaking passengers flying the route for one reason or another that it's worthwhile to do.

All of the countries surrounding Ghana (and Nigeria) are francophone. Many of them fly into LOS and ACC and take ground transport to their final destination. Fares from the US to ACC and LOS are often 1/3 less than similar cities in francophone africa.

Why is cellular use not permitted after landing in Accra?

I was under the impression this was standard across the board at all airport?

United, however, seems the only English speaking airline I can recall that flies to ACC/LOS that does this. I have never heard this done on BA/VS. I havent flown DL to ACC so I cant say about them.

AF fares from most of the francophone cities to the US via CDG isn't too much different than flying out of LOS or ACC. Unless lets say I'm travelling from Lome which is about a 3hr road trip, I don't think I'd want to endure an 8 to 12hr+ road trip, before an 11hr flight.

1) Alot of them come the day before and spend the night as ECOWAS citizens don't need a visa for Ghana.
2) non-stop flights to the US so no worrying about being stuck in the transit area of CDG or BRU for days or applying for a transit visa.
3) No European "green" taxes to pay
4) If you go through a ethnic consolidator you can get UA NYC-ACC for about $1200 while AF NYC-ABJ or COO runs about $1600.

A couple of the comments on the YouTube video mention that Accra looks like a "depressing" destination. Of the views taken from the window, I can't see much difference from an approach to PHX, EWR, LAX, ATL, or STL... which can look somewhat depressing as well!

Some just cannot step out of Disneyland, simple as that. if it is not 100% sterile, they won't venture there.

Nice video. Sad to see the Ghana Airways DC10 I used to work on here at JFK just abandoned like it is. Hope to see your departure video.

I wonder if this is just a lack of knowledge on the flight crew's part?
In this landing video of Emirates, they mention you may not use mobile telephones.

Amazing .. I flew UA990 in June 2010 and the hotel under construction, just off the airport grounds behind the terminal, looks exactly the same, and the UN 757 is in exactly the same place ... as is the Ghana Airways DC-10 (but that wasn't a surprise) ...

Not here in the United States. They make you turn off your phone once the forward boarding door is closed prior to pushback, but on arrival, so long as you have your phone handy and aren't getting up to retrieve it from the overhead while the airplane is taxiing to the gate, you're allowed to use it. Reason I know this is because I am sitting on a DL jet now as we speak waiting for our gate to open up in ATL, and using my approved portable cellular device

Unless they mean you aren't allowed to use it prior to clearing passport control and customs.
