Iberia is to add one extra flight frequency from MAD to LIM on a regular basis effective November 1, 2011, for a total of 11 flights per week. Flights IB6651/6650 (A346) will continue to operate daily, while flights IB6659/6658 (A343) will operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

To date, Iberia's 11th flight frequency to/from LIM had only operated during August and it will do so this year, starting July 31 and ending August 28.

In this particular case, it would be against the game of SkyTeam. Air France and KLM will be flying to/from Lima 12 times per week from June 21 and Iberia is obviously responding to that move. I wouldn't be surprised if IB goes twice daily next year on its route to LIM.

Seems like the LIM routes are busy. My sister and her boyfriend were both bumped on the MAD-LIM route over Easter, and routed via PTY. They weren't happy, but got Euro 600 compensation straight away - not bad for a 3 hour detour.

The new frequency has already been loaded on LAN.com.

Operated by LAN Perú S.A.
LA2706 LIM-MAD daily (B763)
LA2707 MAD-LIM daily (B763)

Operated by IBERIA for LAN Perú S.A.
LA5130 LIM-MAD 4x weekly (A343)
LA5131 MAD-LIM 4x weekly (A343)
LA5100 LIM-MAD daily (A346)
LA5101 MAD-LIM daily (A346)

I wouldn't be surprised if LAN Perú S.A. increased frequency on the LIM-MAD route to 10x weekly when their 2 new B-767-316ERs arrive later this year. LAN Ecuador plans to operate 10 weekly flights between Ecuador and MAD by Q4. LAN Ecuador will operate GYE-MAD-GYE daily and UIO-GYE-MAD-UIO 3x weekly by Q4. Hopefully next year, LAN Perú S.A. will launch a new non-stop service between LIM and Europe with the B-787-8.

Don't forget the 5 weekly MAD-LIM flights by UX. In total Skyteam flies 17 times weekly between Europe and Peru.

IIRC, earlier this year UX planned on operating MAD-LIM daily during Summer, 2011. Perhaps by the end of the year, or early next year, UX will operate MAD-LIM daily. Next year, AF has stated that the CDG-LIM route will operate daily. Thus, ST may operate 21 weekly flights between Europe and Perú in the near future. This will lead to Lufthansa's return to LIM. I would not be surprised if LH resumed FRA-LIM by the end of this year; especially since LH will have domestic connections available with-in Perú via LIM, (and international connections as well), operated by TA.

Time you checked the facts. There is no Star Alliance carrier flying between Spain and Peru. Indeed there is no Star carrier flying from Europe to Peru.
On the contrary, OneWorld is dominant in that market, with IB and LA. The only refreshing competition is from SkyTeam with Air Europa (which does not even have daily frequencies) and KLM, and now its sister AF.

AeroSur currently operates to/from CUZ a couple of times per week. The thing actually is that the current airport serving CUZ can only handle aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 757, if I'm not mistaken. However, a new airport is planned and if I recall correctly it will be able to handle aircraft up to the size of a 747.

Interesting that this all happens now after the doomsday thread following Humala's election.

But I am still left wondering.. can the LIM market absorb that many flights? If it can, why hasn't Iberia (most logical candidate) decided to increase frequencies before somebody else would.

And on an unrelated subject.. could a CUZ-Europe flight work? I know there are many tourists going there, but unless you bring a highy density Air Europa A332 there on a 3-4 weekly basis, I can't really see it work unless it's a tag on. But could a A332 really fly out of elevation? If the new airport will indeed be 747-capable, it'll need one of the longest runways in the world to accomodate such flights.

..sick of it. -K. Pilkington.

LIM is the fastest growing airport in South America. The LIM-MAD route mainly caters to VFR traffic. IB currently operates MAD-LIM 10x weekly. LAN also wants to increase frequency on the LIM-MAD route as well. However, LAN cannot increase frequency on the route currently since the airline has a lack of wide-body a/c. LAN plans to operate B-787-8 flights between LIM and Europe next year.

I'd rather say it's one of the fastest growing airports in South America. IMHO, Guarulhos is THE fastest growing airport in this part of the world.

You're welcome ! Well, all I know is that they plan to begin the construction of the new Cuzco Airport this year and its runway should be one of the longest ones in order to handle medium and some long-haul flights.

GRU is NOT growing at a fast rate, it's almost impossible for airlines to obtain slots at GRU. GRU is also experiencing severe capacity constraints. According to Fraport AG, from January 1st to February 28th, Lima achieved an increase of 20 percent in passenger traffic.

Off-topic: Sure, GRU is slot constrained but that hasn't prevented it to grow by 23.6% in 2010 vis-à-vis 2009. By comparison, LIM grew by 17% (during 2010).

During 2011, I highly doubt that GRU will be able to grow at the rate it did last year; thus LIM has surpassed GRU as the fastest growing airport in South America. SCL is also growing at an astounding rate, maybe SCL will surpass LIM sooner rather than later.
