Sun Country will begin non-stop flights from Minneapolis to Liberia in January 2012. No official press release but I see they announced it on their Facebook page and Liberia is on their route map and bookable.

For a minute there I thought you meant the one in Africa!
Dummy booking looks like it'll run you north of $800 r/t. Same dates you can go to 1-stop SJO for $600 on CO. Is this going to be a business route...or a high-end tourism thing? 'Cause I'm not too sure about this one.
Then again, this is SY... they do the craziest-sounding sh*t all the time and somehow make it work. Case-in-point: LGW is back, and apparently their customers are quite willing to shell out a grand for 1-stop transatlantic on a damn 737 despite plenty of connecting (and WIDEBODY) options being around the same price... and the presence of a daily DL nonstop.

There are a lot of really loyal SY fans around the MSP area who I can see making a point of flying their little hometown airline. Does SY have much connecting traffic or is it mainly O&D?

Don't confuse it with Liberia, Guanacaste !
LIR is basically supporting year-round flights coming from the USA on DL, AA, US and CO. Charter flights were not mentioned here.

The seasonal SY MSP-LIR 1x weekly would be primarily attending leisure traffic.

Nice to see another leisure destination come back. SY/NW used to fly it a few years ago along with ZLO, ACA, POP, PBI, PIE, HUX (applied never started)

Yep at one point NW was one of few US carriers to serve LIR, they used to serve it back in the day with a 752 from MSP. Miss some of the good ole routes from MSP, too bad MSP-OSL didn't work out.

The introduction of Sun Country in Liberia doesn't mean the first announcement this year:
Frontier Airlines began the DEN-LIR 1x weekly seasonal service on February 13th.
Air Berlin will also commence the DUS-CUN-LIR service every two weeks with 332 from November 12th.

I think they should expand more into the tropical destinations, especially from MSP. i could see many wanting to go to tropical places from those temps.

You know it was 105 up here last week, right?
Sun Country flies to tons of tropical destinations, but a lot of them are seasonal and thus they don't fly them in the summer. And many people do fly on Sun Country to those places, they've been doing better and better every year.
'Cause you're on ATA again, and on ATA, you're on vacation!
