Good to see more competition to Tame and Aerogal. Tame isn't the best run airline in my opinion and Aerogal's 732s are worth avoiding.

Hope it doesn't result in too much of an increase in traffic to the islands, although the regulations protecting the environment there are quite strict.

TAME will operate only one weekly flight into SCY. Aerogal usually operates up to 6 weekly flights into SCY, however Aerogal often cancels flights into SCY on a frequent basis due to tech issues with the B732s. LAN Ecuador operates the youngest fleet of a/c in Ecuador. Their oldest A-320 was delivered to LAN Airlines on 22-07-2010.

Are there 4- and 7-day tours leaving from San Cristobal like there are from Baltra?

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

I went to SCY two years ago, then when there were 2 daily TAME and Aerogal flights from GYE. It's a shame to hear the frequencies have been significantly reduced and they are using A319's now, when they had the 752 they sometimes flew it there. Maybe they switched most of the flights to GPS?

Aerogal retired all the 732's the last one went to Avior of Venezuela last month. They have one 733 left which is soon to leave the fleet, and the rest are A319s and the new A320's which have AVOD.

Since San Cristóbal was just literally announced, LAN Vacations hasn't published any tours based from San Cristóbal as yet. Only Quito, Guayaquil and Santa Cruz Island have tours as of now:

Yep, on some days there are five flights into GPS!

The opening of the UIO-GYE-SCY route is made possible with the incorporation of 5 new A-320 a/c that joined LAN Ecuador's fleet since last month. LAN Ecuador will strengthen its services on all domestic routes to Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, and the Galápagos. By replacing the A-318s with A-320s, LAN Ecuador has increased capacity by 33% on all domestic routes. LAN Ecuador has also launched new regional routes with the new A-320s, including the only non-stop service between Ecuador and Argentina: UIO-GYE-EZE-UIO-GYE 5x weekly (A-320) and UIO-GYE-SCL-EZE daily (A-320).

Llegó el quinto A320 para LAN Ecuador

The UIO-GYE-SCY route also cements LAN Ecuador's position as the dominant carrier operating on one of the most important domestic routes with-in South America, the UIO-GYE route. LAN Ecuador currently operates the UIO-GYE route 70x weekly (A-320). With the addition of the the UIO-GYE-SCY route, LAN Ecuador will offer 72 weekly non-stop flights between UIO and GYE. Quite an achievement considering that LAN Ecuador began domestic services with-in Ecuador only two year ago!

I did't mean vacation packages that include flights and hotels like LAN Vacations. I mean the local boats that take you around the islands over a 4 or 7 day period. I had the impression when I was in Galápagos in 2009 that the modus operandi in general is for people to land at Baltra, get picked up by someone from the boat, be taken by van or bus to the dock and taken to the boat in question in a dinghy. Do these boats also sail from San Cristóbal?

Yes, and now there are even more options! You take the quick ferry from Baltra Island to Santa Cruz Island and then the bus or a taxi to Puerto Ayora. At Puerto Ayora there are many tour operators that offer different types of cruises and excursions by boat. They even offer day trips to neighboring islands including San Cristóbal and many boats do sail from San Cristóbal as well. Last year I visited Isabela Island on a nice boat from Santa Cruz Island, lots of fun.

Yep, I'm going to try to fly into San Cristóbal later this year when I go to Guayaquil.

With the reduction of flights into SCY operated by TAME, President Correa stepped in and granted LAN Ecuador the rights to operate into San Cristóbal, Galápagos. He also announced the construction of the first "ecological airport" in the Galápagos Islands.

The Galápagos will be promoted in Europe and the world on the wings of Iberia

On June 8, 2011, Ecuador baptized an Iberia A-340-300 a/c (EC-LHM) and named the a/c "Galápagos" at El Aeropuerto Internacional Mariscal Sucre de Quito during a special ceremony. The purpose of this special baptism is so that Ecuador and the Galápagos are promoted in Europe and through out the world "on the wings of Iberia". Congratulations Iberia! Iberia and all other oneworld alliance carriers can issue e-tickets and boarding passes for all of LAN Ecuador's flights, including those to the Galápagos!

Yes, only domestic flights operated by Ecuadorian carriers are permitted to fly into the Galápagos. All passengers' personal belongings, including luggage must be inspected at the departure airport of every flight operating into the Galápagos. This procedure is referred to as the Inspection and Quarantine system (SICGAL). At the airport of arrival into the Galápagos, your bags will also be inspected. The inspections are required by law in order to avoid the introduction of harmful species to the Islands.

Hola SCL767,

I wanted to ask you, I am planning into going to the Galapagos this fall. My question is, in order to discover the islands, see the famous animals and all the other stuff, is it better to fly to Baltra or San Cristobal?

Thanks!!

Baltra Island only consists of the airport (GPS). When you land you pay the entrance fee to enter the Galápagos National Park and then take the LAN bus to the ferry dock for the two minute ferry ride to Santa Cruz Island. Most people start off in Puerto Ayora, since most cruises and tours depart from there. Also, you should visit the Charles Darwin Center which is in Puerto Ayora. Every island is unique, so it depends on what activities you are interested in, also there are two seasons in the Galápagos, the rainy season and the dry season. I would recommend using the Metropolitan Touring Company: http://bit.ly/jhtRvQ

Adam, look for a ship called La Encantada. It is a sail boat retrofitted with an engine. There are 6 cabins only. For two passengers each. Each cabin has its own bathroom. It is not expensive and it is not really sought by the geriatric set from the U.S. and Japan... mostly twenty- to fortysomethings from Europe and Australia. And do the 7-day tour. It is a Sunday noon to Sunday morning itinerary. If you want more info, contact me via PM or e-mail.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Lan Ecuador cubrirá la ruta a Galápagos con 7 vuelos semanales

LAN Ecuador will continue to operate the daily route between Quito and Guayaquil and Baltra, the Galápagos utilizing the A-320 following DAC's (Ecuador's Aeronautical Authority) decision to suspended all of the frequencies belonging to Ícaro. The Ecuadorian carrier Ícaro will soon dissolve and will liquidate due to its failure to comply with the procedures required by DAC. All of Ícaro frequencies will be returned to the State whereby other airlines, including LAN Ecuador, are expected to apply for the suspended frequencies.

Yesterday, Ecuador's Dirección de Aviación Civil, DAC, revoked a domestic carrier's operating certificate for safety reasons. Thus, Air Cuenca will no longer operate flights with-in Ecuador. Therefore, Ecuador will soon be rid of two domestic carriers and their respective frequencies will be returned to the State.

LAN Ecuador has already loaded flights into SCY; thus LAN Ecuador will soon offer nine weekly A-320 operated flights into the Galápagos:

LAN Ecuador to Offer Second Link to Galápagos:

Quote:
LAN Ecuador will soon introduce a second link to the Galápagos Islands this year with the introduction of a twice weekly service to San Cristóbal. The airline will launch flights from Quito, via Guayaquil, on October 9, complementing its daily schedule to Baltra, which will begin in September. LAN Ecuador, an affiliate of LAN Airlines, becomes the third local carrier to offer regular scheduled links to the Galápagos market. Its two rivals already provide services from Quito and Guayaquil to San Cristóbal. An estimated 35,000 O&D passengers travelled between San Cristóbal and Guayaquil in the past year, with 23,000 making the journey to or from Quito.
LAN Ecuador to Offer Second Link to Galápagos

However, with the addition of LAN Ecuador's twice weekly service on the UIO-GYE-SCY route; there will only be 9 flights a week operating into SCY. Unlike its rivals, LAN Ecuador will offer good connections via its own flights and flights operated by other LAN affiliate carriers across Latin America and into North America and Europe.

Schedule:
XL1561 UIO 0815 0910 GYE 0955 1050 SCY A320 17
XL1560 SCY 1135 1435 GYE 1515 1610 UIO A320 17
