Has anybody had experiences onboard both carriers? How would you rate the business class services? Are there any advantages to either? I have read all the trip reports I could find, but would really like some further information.

I have flown Air New Zealand business class many, many times and find it to be one of the best travel experiences available in the sky. Good seats (even on the 767), nice food, talented f/a's, etc. And, NZ understands long-range travel and gives you the opportunity to rest on the flight. I am always most impressed with their service.
UA business is also very good, have flown it transatlantic but not transpacific; if you are travelling to NZ or Australia, give NZ a try, I think you will be happily surprised.

I have flown business in a United 767-300, even though to NZ it is a 747, same seat. It was excellent, has a back massage system, footrest, headrest, adjustable lumbar support.
Either way you go, United or Air NZ, you will be satisfied.

I have done LAX-SYD in business class on both UA and NZ. While it's been many years since I've been on NZ, they used to use the same seats, the difference was that UA had the circulating lumbar support and the white-noise headseats while NZ did not. NZ had better food.
Besides that, the amount of legroom was roughly equivalent. This was on a 747-400 in both cases

I have just done 4 trips between LAX and SYD over the last three weeks, two on UA and two on NZ, all in J class.
No comparison. NZ excelled, brilliant food, non stop bottled water at the seat, very good FA's (who made a point of remembering each persons name and stopped to talk for a while).
UA by comparison were a bit jaded, and I felt the service was no where near as spontaneous
I managed to sleep about 9 hours in the NZ seats, but only about 5 hours in the UA ones.
