Air Show Public Days Becoming A Farce

I have waited quite a long time but after the latest news from PAS11 I just had to vent my frustration so please bear with me

But seriously - why is it that in the last years airframers increasingly pull their latest products from display before the public days open? Last year at Farnborough seeing the 787 and the A400 disappear early was disappointing enough, but seeing that Boeing appears to pull its entire range before Friday and Airbus not managing to get another A380 flown in from Toulouse after its incident earlier on Sunday is just farcical (if this ultimately turns out not to be the case I apologise humbly in advance!)

I appreciate that sometimes you may have aircraft under development and you need any day you can get for continuing testing. Equally, I'm sure someone may raise the argument that the general public does not decide over fleet orders for commercial nor military aircraft, and that for most people simply seeing the same aircraft every two years is great enough.. but then you cannot advertise on your blogs or websites with "aircraft xyz to visit Paris" or "This year company Z will showcase the latest megajet" when you already at the time of writing know that it won't be around come the time the show opens it doors to the ones who typically read blogs or promotional websites, namely enthusiasts - who happen to pay quite a lot to travel to shows just to see the latest developments and only learn of this through unofficial channels... Sure, there are many who work in the industry and can get access on the trade days (myself included), but this is the vast minority.

I'm quite surprised this issue has not been discussed more widely or am I the only one feeling slightly let down by the companies we all love and support?

Looking forward to hearing your views.

WHAT??? Is Boeing not going to have anything for the public? I'm at Le Bourget on Saturday and I'm disappointed to hear this. I don't care about the A388 as I've seen it 2 years ago and flew it on CDG-JFK last year, but I really wanted to see the 788 and 748...

Where aviation is not the side show, it's the main show!!!

Having been involved with airshow support, I can tell you that the shows are fiendishly expensive for the manufacturers to support. The primary purpose of those shows is to make it easier for the decision makers to get together. Having them all in one place makes the logistics of multiple meetings somewhat easier. Keeping expensive assets around for even one extra day, not to mention the cost of skeleton support just doesn't make it past the bean counters these days.

This is about to become the most boring Paris Air Show ever for the general public.

We're really disappointed and having second thoughts on going.
2013 is definitely no longer on my agenda.

That would be great! Now if only somebody managed to convince Boeing to at least keep the 747-8I there until Sunday...

You seem to forget this is first and foremost a trade show, not entertainment for the public. While the organizers may try to convey an image of these shows being open to the public, fact is that when the decision makers representing the purchasers have packed up and gone home, so will a large number of vendors who are there to promote their wares.

Do also keep in mind the huge cost of having aircraft parked, let alone flying, for no other apparent marketing benefit; it's not an auto show we're talking about here.

I do appreciate the frustrations from enthusiasts who've bought tickets believing they'd be seeing all the newest metal in the flesh, and in the air too, but I cannot say the decision to pull the big items from the show on public days comes as a surprise.
