So I'm outside waiting for my flight over at T5 and out of nowhere comes a black helicopter and in 9 years working JFK, I've never seen it before. Anyway, this was at 1200 and was hovering over 31R more to the side of the parallels. I'd say it must of been a few hundred feet up and dam close to 4L which was the active departure runway at the time. It had some markings more like designs maybe but it stayed around for at least 15-20mins. I really don't think it was PA but maybe gov't. PA has white helicopters but I haven't seen one in awhile so maybe this is something new that they got?? Thinking out of the box, I said to my buddy next to me, maybe there shooting some footage of aircraft taking off for a commercial or movie. Anyway just curious if anyone has any info on this. It was very out of the ordinary which is why I'm asking. Thanks in advance.

In that case, I guess the response would be "There was no black helicopter. It was a weather balloon doing atmospheric research".

Did it land at all? There is a chopper touchdown area right by T5.

I know DHL has a pad but it was on our side (T5) and I didn't see it land. It was hovering right over 31R over by gate 15. Came in from the southwest. I was marshaling my flight in and by the time it was blocked in, the helicopter was gone. It was really close though to the active departure runway 4L. Thats really all I got. Where is the pad your talking about????

Holy crap there is!!!!! LMAO I've never seen a helicopter land there though and I've never noticed the markings before. Makes sense then, he hovered and waited to be cleared in. I was at gate 20 so I wouldn't of seen him land. So odd though. Who would land there????? Anyway you can find out if it landed on that pad? You think you know everything about where you work.

Have a look at this link below... If it was Black w/ gold trim, it was most likely a US Customs bird...

If you listen to the JFK Tower tapes off LiveATC.net around that time you can hear Tower working two helicopters. One with callsign "Blackhawk 94" initially cleared to hold short of runway 31L then cleared to land on the "Q" helipad, the other was "8TD" (I didn't catch the full callsign) was doing some sort of airwork then cleared to land at the "J.A.T." Whatever that is, the "J.A.T." ? Both helicopters were in close proximety to each other at one point and pointd out as mutual traffic by the Tower..

Or it was monitoring ground level chemtrail distribution... Think about that. I just blew your mind...

Interesting... Well Q pad would be by the old Tower Air hanger or really at the beginning of 13R corrected if I'm wrong please but J.A.T you got me. The J.A.T would be the copter I saw as the Q is nowhere near T5.

No, Customs is not that type of agency...More likely they were deporting a bunch of Sweds...

"Blackhawk 94" initially called up over "Sandy Hook" and was cleared in via the "Coney Island" route to holdshort of runway 31L, for the "Q" helipad for "Hangar 19". Going back into the ATC archive, the full callsign of the other helicopter was N408TD, you can hear them departing the "J.A.T." at around 11:23 (1523Z), it appeared they were doing some sort of airwork flying up and down the runways and taxiways, at one point landing on 13L, then just as a USAF C-17 was departing they were cleared "300 feet to transition to taxiway "A" clockwise to complete your mission", once the C-17 is clear Tower advised they would stop 4L departures until they were done. This is around 15:29:30 on the LiveATC archive.

Sounds like some sort of conspiracy theory to me. Black helicopters and C-17's !?

Was listening on LiveATC, the chopper orbiting low level around / over the 31's was taking pictures of the terminals.

Who they were and why the needed pictures of the terminals......no clue

Yo Dave; yes there is an active helipad right near T5 between DA and F for the transition from Bravo to Alpha. I have to avoid that one; when we are sweeping around on the taxiways...crossing a helipad without permission is an incursion of some sort...and Port gives you a BOR.

and it's not "JAT" it's probably "GAT" = General Aviation Terminal...behind Building 14; I forget the number of the building now.

IIRC, it's BLDG 145. I may be wrong. When I started at B6 I was based over there at BLDG 141. Aaaaahhh, memories, especially the lovely smell coming from the sewage treatment plant over there LOL!

Well there is lots doing with 5 being taken down, expansion of 4 and everything else like Delta's terminals ect ect so maybe that has something to do with it. Or they could of very well been taking shots of departing aircraft. Who knows.

25 tsnamm : working at Bldg 71 we saw the helicopter hovering just a few feet off the runway and rotating in 90 degree increments, as soon as we saw the C-17 tak
26 mmedford : My old man use to work over there at 141; he was in GSE as a Mechanic. Before they moved over to the cargo area. and Dave...can't see I've ever seen
