DL used to have a lot of capacity in SJU back in the day. See this news article from the (presumably) 1980's promoting all L1011 service...

When did the nonstop to MSY start and end? I know it was flown with a DC-8 before it went to L1011. Most of the time, IIRC, it was routed LAX-MSY-SJU.

Speaking of MSY-SJU, that's a route I'd like to see added again by some carrier. When you consider that MSY-SJU has over triple the number of daily passengers than JAX-SJU does, a route flown by B6 nonstop, I'd say it has at least some potential. Too bad it wouldn't be good old Dixie flying the route.

Next trip: MSY-SEA-GEG-SEA-LWS-BOI-PDX-SEA-LAS on AS

Interesting - and sooooo nostalgic! I used to pick up the Atlanta newspaper in our middle and high school libraries just so I could look at all those Delta ads! MSY also used to have a nonstop to either CCS or MAR on DL. Those were the days, eh?

Finally made it to an airline mecca!

DL had quite the schedule out of MSY pre-deregulation.

It wasn't that long ago (until 2008, I think) that DL had a fairly large Crown Room/Sky Club at SJU.

I'm thinking its from the 70's rather than the 80's due to the fact that ATL-SJU is a thru flight rather than nonstop. Departed Flights dot com shows nonstops by 1981, thru flights in 1979, not sure when the nonstops started.

Up to the mid 90's the DL operation at JFK was mostly widebody (L1011's) flights from ATL and MCO with a 757 thrown here and there. MCO was canned in the mid 90's and only ATL was kept, until JFK flights were added and MCO returned with SONG. I recall on weekends in the time span of an hour you could see two L-1011's inbound from the ATL, quite the sight. Now it's mostly 757's.

Chepos

That was largely inherited from C&S, was it not?

Interesting, Eastern had plenty of widebody service to/from SJU back in those days. EAL was the largest carrier in SJU, AA also flew DC10s and 747s to SJU, National DC10s, Capitol DC10s and the foreigns like AV (747), IB (747/DC10), LH (747/DC10).

Seems the DL schedule to SJU involved mostly 767-300s until the last few years; now it looks like it's all 757-200s.

TWA also had 747 service to SJU from JFK in the mid-late 90's before being downgraded to 762's and eventually 757's before they "merged" with AA...

There were also seasonal flights to CVG off and on from SJU. In the '90s, it was on a 757 (which continued to CMH), while it was a 738 when I was there in 2006.

Also, MSY-MBJ was still operated when I hired on in '71.

IIRC, DL operated a non-stop LAX-SJU for awhile, but I can't remember the dates.

The oldest Delta timetale I have is dated October 31, 1971 and Delta is already flying San Juan-New Orleans. So service on the route obviously pre-dates this.

Effective October 31, 1971:

DL 859
Dep San Juan 9:30am
Arr New Orleans 11:23am
Douglas DC-8 (36 F/99Y)
Ex ThuSat
Actual flight routing: SJU-MSY-LAX-SAN

There was also a second flight that stopped in Montego Bay.....

DL 879
Dep San Juan 8:20am
Arr Montego Bay 9:14am
Dep Montego Bay 9:45am
Arr New Orleans 11:26am
Douglas DC-8 (36F/99Y)
SatOnly
Actual flight routing: SJU-MBJ-MSY-LAX-SAN

At the time, these were the ONLY flights on Delta out of San Juan.

By March 1, 1973, the only Delta service out of San Juan was a single daily nonstop to New Orleans. (The flight via Montego Bay had been discontinued. However, there was still a three times-weekly nonstop from Montego Bay to New Orleans).

Effective March 1, 1973:

DL 859
Dep San Juan 9:30am
Arr New Orleans 11:23am
Douglas DC-8 (36F/99Y)
Daily
Actual flight routing: SJU-MSY-LAX-SAN

Effective April 24, 1977, Delta was offering 9 weekly flights from San Juan to New Orleans (Still the only Delta service from San Juan).

Effective April 24, 1977:

DL 965
Dep San Juan 11:00am
Arr New Orleans 1:47pm
Douglas Super DC-8 (26F/173Y)
Daily
Actual flight routing: SJU-MSY-LAX-SFO

DL 983
Dep San Juan 9:00pm
Arr New Orleans 11:47pm
Douglas Super DC-8
FriSatOnly
Actual flight routing: SJU-MSY-LAX-SFO

By December 15, 1979, nonstop service to Miami had been added in addition to the New Orleans service.

Effective December 15, 1979:

SAN JUAN-MIAMI
DL 1136
Dep San Juan 10:25am
Arr Miami 11:47am
L-1011 (32F/261Y)
Daily
Actual flight routing: SJU-MIA-ORD

DL 1065
Dep San Juan 5:50pm
Arr Miami 7:12pm
L-1011 (32F/261Y)
Daily
Actual flight routing: SJU-MIA-ATL-DFW-LAX

SAN JUAN-NEW ORLEANS
DL 1165
Dep San Juan 1:25pm
Arr New Orleans 3:15pm
L-1011 (32F/261Y)
Daily
Actual flight routing: SJU-MSY-LAX-SFO

Effective April 27, 1980, Delta still only operated from San Juan to Miami and San Juan.

By March 1, 1981, New Orleans service had been DROPPED and Atlanta service added.

Effective March 1, 1981:

SAN JUAN-ATLANTA
DL 1123
Dep San Juan 9:00am
Arr Atlanta 11:47am
L-1011 (32F/261Y)
ExSat
Actual flight routing: SJU-ATL-LAX

DL 1129
Dep San Juan 12:00pm
Arr Atlanta 2:47pm
L-1011 (32F/261Y)
SatOnly
Actual flight routing: SJU-ATL-LAX

SAN JUAN-MIAMI
DL 1098
Dep San Juan 1:00am
Arr Miami 2:24am
L-1011 (32F/261Y)
Daily
Actual flight routing: SJU-MIA-ATL

DL 1134
Dep San Juan 4:25pm
Arr Miami 5:49pm
L-1011 (32F/261Y)
Daily
Actual flight routing: SJU-MIA-ATL-DFW

Delta would not add another new route from San Juan until April 25, 1982 when it added San Juan-Orlando nonstop service.

So to specifically answer MSYTriStar's question....SJU-MSY nonstops started at LEAST prior to October 1971 (with narrow-body equipment).....switched to L-1011 wide-body equipment by December 1979.....and dropped the route between April 1980 and March 1981.

Well, the MSY-SJU service was a C&S route and I believe it was continuous from May 1st, 1953, the date of the DL/C&S merger. I know for sure it was in service on 9/27/71, when I hired on with DL and I'm sure before that.
