Looks like Mahan Air and GECAS are having a dispute. Today's BHX-IKA service has been grounded with over 100 passengers affected. Story on the BBC website.

Wonder if it has anything to do with sanctions, or simply a case of W5 not keeping up with the lease payments.

It is virtually impossible to move money in and out of Iran compared to any other developed or partially developed country. I am sure it's a daily nightmare for international companies like W5 to do business. I suspect this is a factor. Cash up front next time?

Have flown W5 a few times in the last few weeks (all 747s inc domestic) and they seem like a professional organisation. Big HQ building near Mehrabad airport. Iranair labours under the burden of being the state-owned carrier and hence the appointment of incompetent people to important positions due to political influence; Mahan is a private enterprise and hence much more of a meritocracy.

Hope the problem at BHX is worked out quickly.

Are you inferring therefore, that Iran Air CEO Farhad Parvaresh obtained his position through nepotism rather than merit?

I don't know. I wasn't being specific. There are plenty of very capable and hard-working men and women at IR. My many flights with the Homa bird have all been a pleasure and delivered me and my bags to my destination on time. I can only repeat my statement - as the national carrier, IR is more vulnerable to having important positions filled by political appointees than a privately-owned airline like W5. There are certainly cases - IR's A320 aquisition being a prime example - where political interference has hurt the airline. Why the hurt tone, qantas747flyer? Are you related to Mr Parvaresh?

(As it happens, I met the boss of a major European airline (a REALLY REALLY big one), and he said he had met Mr Parvaresh at an IATA conference in Vancouver, and described him as a good man doing a good job under uniquely difficult circumstances. So in fact there's anecdotal evidence that Mr Parvaresh has earned his position. Better?)

I understand that Mr Parvaresh has been with Iran Air for many years prior to becoming CEO. In this case therefore as the Iran Air CEO appears to have earned his position through merit, it seems unlikely that the important positions at Iran Air are occupied by politically appointed persons.
