"In a research note today, OSK Research said an announcement of the joint venture (JV) to set up a low-cost carrier, likely to be called AirAsia Japan, was expected sometime next week.

"The JV's structure is uncertain but it may see both companies taking up equity stakes, with AirAsia being the airline's operator," it said."

It will be great to see what materialises from this. It is about time that North Asia had a true, challenging, lower-cost, and lower-fare operator.

If this happens, it will be good for us in Japan.
The really issue for success is how other Japanese carriers react. Maybe it is time for a few domestic mergers again?

Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

So there's likely to be an Air Asia Japan and Jetstar Japan. Interesting, considering both carriers signed a partnership agreement, which in all honesty seems to have gone nowhere.

Is there much room for further mergers? There aren't that many carriers that aren't aligned in some way. Some brand consolidation maybe.
